Betrayed By The Hero, Loved By The Lord novel Chapter 24

Chapter 24: Divorce (2)

"You had a chance to stop this but went through with it. It won’t be long before I will be married to Cassandra. When you wake up to realise your wrongdoings and want to return, you will be my second woman. I won’t have the right to ask the king for a second wife so you will be nothing more than a mistress," said Gabriel.

Selene wanted Gabriel to be silent. The divorce was done quickly to her surprise. Even the court appeared surprised by her willingness to get away from Gabriel.

Selene didn’t want anything from Gabriel. Nothing that she might have left at his home or any apologies for the shame he brought her. All she wanted was not to be recognised as a Valor.

"He will throw you away-"

"Gabriel," Selene said, annoyed by his constant chatter. "I am no longer your wife therefore I am not your concern anymore. If my choice backfires then it is my problem to bear alone. You will wed another woman so I encourage you to focus only on her. You went along with everything said in there so why bother me now?"

"Because you are yet to wake up to the cold harsh truth. Why did you come to me in the past? I was the only one willing to marry a woman like you," Gabriel said, hoping she hadn’t forgotten.

"We were both desperate. You chased status while I chased being protected. We both don’t need that from each other so leave me be. I can admit that I used you a bit but why can’t you admit to your reasons for our marriage? Never mind," Selene quickly added. She just wanted to get back to Xavier and be out of the palace.

During what was said by the court all Selene could think about was whether Xavier was being annoyed by Cassandra and if he had attempted to kill her.

Selene continued on her way to the door where Xavier should be waiting for her.

"I will continue to have my name spoken in the kingdom. I wanted to give you a taste of how I felt living with you but I have seen that we are not good for each other. I shouldn’t keep a woman who came from a family of traitors at my side. Cassandra might be a human but she is not ruined like you," said Gabriel.

Selene stopped walking to confront Gabriel. He could say all he wanted about her but she wouldn’t allow him to keep spreading lies about her parents.

Before Selene could respond, the doors opened with a loud bang as they hit the walls due to the force they had been pushed open.

Selene was now able to see Xavier who was the one to open the doors and a frightened Cassandra.

"Are you mad?" Gabriel asked, examining the state of the doors. "You broke it."

"Did I? It seems I did," Xavier said, now seeing a crack. "That was not what I was looking to break. Selene," he held out his hand for Selene. "I assume it is over with."

Selene composed herself since the door had also startled her then made her way to Xavier to hold his hand. She wondered if he heard what Gabriel said but that shouldn’t be possible. There were special stones placed around the court so vampires could not eavesdrop.

"It is," Selene replied. "I am no longer his wife. Thank you."

If not for Xavier seeking the king’s help, this would have been dragged on.

"I am happy to see Xavier be so involved with a woman but given her family history, I would think twice- No," Darius stopped his guards from approaching because Xavier tried to come near him. "It’s not like you to not get your hands around my neck before the guards could stop you. Restraining yourself today?"

Cassandra was puzzled by the sight of Selene tugging on Xavier’s shirt being the reason he did not go to the king. ’That little touch stopped him?’ She wondered.

"Selene, if Xavier here does not take great care of you then you are always welcomed in the palace or I am most certain Gabriel will be kind to offer you a place in your old home. Xavier, you rude bastard," Darius muttered but he wasn’t surprised Xavier took Selene to leave though the king was speaking. "It’s good you’ve moved on. I don’t think you’ll get her back."

"With all due respect my king, I don’t want her back," Gabriel replied. "Even you mentioned her family issue."

"Her parents were accused of being traitors. It didn’t matter to you when you chose to marry her but you have a reputation now so it is good to see you thinking. I have never seen that man act that way. It would be good if he is in love with her," Darius said as he plotted to tell the other families.

Gabriel expected the king to be certain nothing serious would come out of whatever Xavier and Selene found themselves in since the king knew Xavier better than he did. "Lord Blackthorn is a loner. He has never cared for anyone."

"My point exactly. Why am I still here?" Darius said, now realising who he stood with. He had only come to see Xavier but the man was gone. ’"I have important matters to deal with so excuse me. I will congratulate you now on your coming marriage."

"Thank you. I will make sure you are the first invitation-"

"Oh," Darius laughed at Gabriel thinking he was that important "That is not necessary. I don’t have any interest in attending."
