Betrayed By The Hero, Loved By The Lord novel Chapter 27

Chapter 27: Disapproval (2)

Josephine placed herself between the two men. While she didn’t want Xavier to marry just anyone, it came as a surprise Xavier even considered marriage. "Nathaniel, this is the first time we have heard about him wanting to marry. We should hear him out first. I’m sure there’s a reasonable explanation."

It wasn’t that long ago Josephine recalled Xavier was convinced he would go into a deep slumber, now he was getting married?

Josephine wanted to thank Selene if she was the reason behind the change but at the same time, she understood her husband’s concerns. Xavier had to make a smart pick for a wife. "Last I heard, she is married. There must be another Selene. Is it Mary’s daughter?"

"I said her last name. It is the Selene you are thinking of so you can stop with guesses. Her first marriage has ended as of today so will we get married in a few days. It will be a small private wedding. I have not decided if I will invite both of you," Xavier said since his father didn’t know how to act.

"This has always been your plan. You want to see us laughed at. I have told you time and time again that he will be the one to ruin this family," Nathaniel said to Josephine. "You cannot marry that woman."

"I didn’t come here to ask for your permission. I came to inform you about it. It wasn’t needed but I did as she wanted. You should be happy to know she thinks of being respectful to you," said Xavier.

Reginald, the butler, arrived with the shirt Xavier requested and the blood he was to take to Josephine.

Nathaniel refused to let Xavier be served after the news he brought them so he took the glass of blood and threw it in Xavier’s way.

"Dramatic much?" Xavier replied, not surprised by the childish reaction.

"Nathaniel!" Josephine gasped. "That wasn’t needed."

"The shirt," Xavier said to Reginald as he started to take off his stained shirt. "Your habits have not changed. I had hoped to return to Selene just as I left but now she might be concerned. The shirts are not similar to fool her."

Josephine had much to question from Selene’s divorce to where Xavier was returning to see Selene. "Xavier, I once adored Selene but that was in the past. Her parents were named traitors and from my last sit down with my peers, she is currently the joke for our kind. Her husband replaced her with a human."

Josephine knew there could be even more laughter once it came out Selene’s marriage was no more. "It might not be wise to wed her."

"Might not be wise? It isn’t," Nathaniel corrected Josephine. "There are other women."

"What a shame. I won’t be getting married if it isn’t to Selene. It wouldn’t be too hard to bring back my coffin. I’ve done my part in informing you as she wanted so it’s time that I leave. Why argue with you when I can enjoy my day with her?" Xavier asked, preferring to be elsewhere.

Josephine didn’t know what to do. Like everyone else would say, Selene wasn’t a good choice for Xavier but with Xavier showing this side, she wanted to support him. Unfortunately, Josephine thought of Selene’s troubles dragging Xavier down.

Josephine was normally the one Xavier could hold a conversation with. He had little hope she would be too excited to care about Selene’s family and offer help telling him all that a lady would need.

Xavier continued on his way so he could return home in time for dinner.

Josephine didn’t see him out since she needed to speak to Nathaniel. "He was never going to marry anyone we picked. We both knew that. He has chosen a pureblood."

"I will not accept her," Nathaniel replied.

"You know our son. He will marry her even if the whole world is against it. We should just prepare for it to happen. Selene will need someone to guide her so she doesn’t make a mockery of the Blackthorn name so I will visit her. Do not look at me like that," Josephine said, refusing to bend to his liking.

"It will create tension amongst the families and I know many will voice they are against this but if I have to choose, I will go with Xavier. I need to see for myself what has blossomed between him and Selene. By some luck, he is getting married. Let us see what it is first," Josephine said, trying to be the voice of reason.

"No," Nathaniel denied Josephine’s way of handling this. "I must speak to the others about this. You have your way and I have mine."

Josephine sighed. "I hope your way does not end with you placed in a coffin. I am not ready to be a widow."
