"You have been speaking of bloodlines quite often these days. I don’t know if it is you who cares about it or if your family is pushing for Xavier to marry but I am a little tired of it. Since bloodlines matter so much, what do you think of our marriage? You could have picked anyone else. Was your family upset with me?" Josephine asked.
Most welcomed her but there were a few that were never happy. Luckily, Josephine didn’t care to have all the Blackthorns love her.
"We made a son who inherited the talents of the old Blackthorns. My family doesn’t have a reason to question our marriage. What we want now is for Xavier to match with a young lady who is just as strong as he is. That’s what matters here," Nathaniel replied careful with his answer to not further upset Josephine.
"It was a chance that our son became so strong. I’m sure in the past they questioned it. Xavier was so small then so there were doubts. You have not answered my question yet. I’m sure it is not now that bloodlines are coming up. If it is so important, why did you marry me?" Josephine asked once more.
Josephine’s family had riches and status but she wasn’t from one of the five families nor was she related to anyone who married into one of the families.
"You know it is because I loved you. It is that simple. Why ask when you know the answer?" Nathaniel questioned, annoyed that they were speaking about this. "Do not allow him to put things in your head."
"It has always been there. He only reminded me to ask. Since you were given the freedom to marry for love, why can’t our son have that? He came to see us to tell us about his marriage. That is how I know he is serious about this. We should stand back this time," Josephine suggested.
"I might have allowed it with anyone else but not to her. Her family are traitors," Nathaniel reminded Josephine.
"I am aware. I have not forgotten that big scandal. What you must remember is that it was her parents doing, not her. We can’t oust her for what she did not do. She might not be from one of your precious families but we all know they had their special abilities. You would not miss out if they were to have a child," said Josephine.
"Stay out of it," Nathaniel advised Josephine. "I have already sent word to the others."
"I will not stay out of it. My only son is getting married so I will not miss it. I highly doubt there will be a second marriage since Xavier is one to consider all the downsides before he jumps into something. I will go alone since you might ruin the wedding," Josephine said, her heart set on attending.
"Josephine."
"Nathaniel," Josephine matched Nathaniel’s tone. "If you or anyone else doesn’t like that I am supporting this, then come see me. I need someone to unleash my anger on. It’s been a while since I fought," she said, examining her nails.
"If you upset me then you will upset my father and you know he has started to dislike you. You’re trying to control his precious grandson too much. Even my mother wants to scold you for the way you act. Sometimes, it feels like I get punished by Xavier for your actions," said Josephine.
Who cared about Xavier finally getting married? He was going to marry at some point. What mattered was picking the right wife.
Josephine didn’t need Nathaniel to speak to know he planned to continue with his ways. His relationship with Xavier wouldn’t get better at this rate. "You were close to her father at one point and was around Selene a lot. Aside from what they did, can’t you find it in your heart to not be so upset?"
"Watch your tongue. I have never been friends with those people. It could not help that we found ourselves in the same spaces. Did we ever sit alone with them? Arrange for our children to play? Do not go around saying we were once friends," Nathaniel advised Josephine. "I will not be attached to traitors."
"It isn’t a secret that we got along with them and attended many parties where we spoke. It shocked us just as it did everyone that they were plotting to harm the king. Everyone involved was caught and killed. No one will think of us as traitors. I truly hope you will not come to regret how you have acted. I truly do," said Josephine.
Josephine turned her attention to the scenery the carriage passed by. The night was still young so there was plenty to do.
Nathaniel was confident he wouldn’t regret anything he said. He would regret not telling Xavier to think twice about this. "She just got divorced from that mixed-blood and already she is getting ready to marry again."
’I heard talk of him wanting to marry that human woman. Do not upset me even more with your double standards," Josephine warned Nathaniel. It might be the last straw to make her hurt him.
