Chapter 60: Trouble (2)

"Harold noticed you didn’t return in a good mood so I asked Lucas about it. Is it normal for you to not get along with your friend’s husband?" Xavier asked.

"In recent times, that is the norm. I remember the time he liked my friendship with Fiona since he was helped by me a lot. It wasn’t that long ago I was helping them. I do not know if he wants to pretend he didn’t receive help or thinks it came from someone else," Selene replied.

It was obvious that Fiona and Oliver were having trouble with their finances but Selene didn’t want to point them out when Fiona tried her hardest to hide it.

"I am used to it. Many who received help from my family in the past have become like that. I was upset at one time but I know it is from them trying to protect their names. I visit Fiona because I worry about her being there with his temper. When he doesn’t have money, he inherits a bad personality," Selene said, regretting Fiona did not come with her.

"So, why doesn’t she leave him? Too in love?" Xavier asked, seeing this case one too many times.

"Like any other wife, her life revolves around Oliver. She thinks there is nothing without him since there won’t be anyone to take her in. I would help her but she isn’t confident that would work well for her. The most I can do is visit her but that seems to be causing trouble for her. I don’t know what to do," Selene said, feeling helpless when it came to Fiona.

"Leave her," Xavier advised Selene. "You have offered your help. It is up to her to come to you as you came to me. Trying to convince her too much might have her pull away from you. It is not a good place to be in to pick between a good friend and a tiring husband."

"I try not to say it straight out what my intentions are but I do tell her that I am always near. I do not want her to wait too late for her to end up hurt before she gets away. She cannot wait for him to have money for him to be a good man. She doesn’t deserve it. Husbands are tiring these days," Selene sighed.

Xavier frowned. "Why is it that I am affected by what a couple of fools did?"

"Oh," Selene realised her mistake. "I wasn’t thinking of you."

Xavier flicked her forehead. "You forgot you had a husband and he was sitting beside you?"

Selene touched her forehead and leaned away from Xavier. "No. I wasn’t thinking of you among the tiring husbands. It would be hard for me to forget that I am married to you. From the carriage to the ring, it is hard to forget."

"I will do as you said and give her some space for now but I must check on her again. Hopefully, a time will come when he is not around her. Fiona is not a friend I want to lose. We have met in secret most times after my parents’ death but I do not mind it. Being around her reminds me of the time before the world fell apart," said Selene.

"I know many want to protect what reputations they think they have but a friend who has to meet you in secret doesn’t seem like a friend. I don’t care how much she makes you think of the past. Who are these Fiona and Oliver people for the town to care about?" Xavier asked, seeing no need to sugarcoat his words. frёewebnoѵēl.com
