Nathan inhaled sharply and grinned. “You really have no romantic bone in your body, do you, Ms. Hudson?”

But before Sadie could answer, Nathan’s carefree expression gave way to a serious one.

His position within the Higgins family was a precarious one at best. Given Sadie’s intelligence, she should understand his

situation without him having to explain.

Snatching Jarrett’s project outright would only incite the old geezers of the clan to band against him.

When that happened, Nathan could forget about forming new business partnerships; he’d likely get kicked out of the

family.

“I actually have a solution that works for both of us,” he drawled.

Sadie impatiently clicked her tongue. “Just say it. I don’t have time for your games.”

Nathan briefly closed his eyes, a hint of embarrassment passing his face. Sadie really wasn’t giving him an inch.

He cleared his throat to clear the awkward air then said, “I may need a small favor from you before we put this plan into

motion, Ms. Hudson. I need you to help me keep Mr. Noel in check.”

Sadie paused in the act of taking another sip.

She slowly lifted her gaze from her cup, her curiosity almost imperceptible. What was Nathan getting at? And why was he bringing up Nathan?

Sadie calmly put her cup down and said, “Mr. Noel and I have nothing to do with each other.”

Nathan nearly burst out laughing.

Last night at the hotel, Patrick had looked at him as if he wanted to rip him apart there and then.

Nathan was convinced he had barely made it out of there alive. Even now, the memory of those dangerous eyes sent a chill

down his spine.

Nothing to do with each other? Ha! Nathan didn’t buy it for a second.

But time was tight, and the die had already been cast. There was no turning back.

Nathan took another deep breath and made up his mind. “Why don’t we get engaged? That way, I’ll have a legitimate

reason to rein in those old–timers in the Higgins family.”

Sadie had just taken another sip, but she almost spat out the coffee at his words. She dissolved into a coughing fit, even as

she tried to make sense of his words.

When she finally got her breath back, she dabbed at the corners of her mouth and shot Nathan an exasperated glare.

I’ve secured my place in the Higgins family, you are free to call off the engagement, and I won’t stop you. I’ll go along with

whatever you decide.”

His face was earnest and sincere, and if she looked closely, Sadie might even find a trace of grievance there.

This man was really good at acting.

Sadie’s upper lip curled at Nathan’s theatrics. She felt both annoyed and amused.

As absurd as the idea was, Nathan’s proposal did have merit.

Jarrett had joined forces with the Johnson family, and their combined power and influence was no small threat.

Nathan, on the other hand, was isolated and outnumbered. He needed something substantial in his corner in order to

challenge Jarrett’s authority.
