William’s POV: 

The droplets of blood aroused suspicion in me. Whose blood was it? I diligently checked Sophia and little George to see if Caroline had injured them, but they were both without a scratch. In fact, for someone who had just taken a pretty nasty fall, Sophia was perfectly okay. 

Growing more puzzled by the second, I asked the maid and the housekeeper if they were injured, but both denied it. That left only one person who could be the source of the crimson stain: Caroline. I vividly remembered how she had covered her mouth and frantically dashed away. Was that where the blood came from? If so, then what was wrong with her? 

I recalled all the alarming changes I had seen to her body. She looked unnaturally haggard and skinny, and no one lost weight that quickly. Why hadn’t I realized the seriousness of the problem before? Even if she was sick as I’d suspected, it was clearly no small problem. She was clearly hiding something. What was her secret? 

Needing answers, I wasted no time and quickly dialed Laden, who soon picked up. “Hey, Laden, can you do me a favor? I need to look up Caroline’s medical records. Do you think you can help me out?” 

“Hmm, we’re not supposed to do that, but for you, I can make an exception,” Laden replied cautiously. “Just give me a moment.” I waited, impatiently tapping my foot as I listened to Laden typing away at a computer for a few minutes. A frown fitted my face when I heard him hum with confusion. 

“I’m looking for them,” he said at last, “but it seems like someone is manually hiding her records.” 

There was only one person who could be the culprit: Martin. He was an irritating man who always seemed weirdly attached to Caroline, staying around her at all times after the divorce. There was no doubt in my mind that it was him. 

I thanked Laden for helping me out with my little problem and then scheduled an appointment to urgently see Martin the very next day. 

The next morning, I marched into Martin’s office without even bothering to inform one of the nurses. I locked the door behind me, glaring at the man keeping me from finding out about my ex–wife’s condition. 

Martin offered me a nonchalant look, completely unintimidated. “Can I help you?” he asked, sounding almost bored at the sight of me. 

I growled, unhappy with his blatant disrespect. “I need to know about Caroline’s condition, and you’re hiding it from me.‘ 

He scoffed in my face. “We’re not allowed to disclose medical information. That’s between you and Caroline, and last I checked, she doesn’t want to be anywhere near you.”

Anger began to bubble in my veins. “I will ruin you,” I threatened. “I can easily get you fired from this hospital, and I will destroy the business relationship between our families. Tell me about her condition now!” 

Martin didn’t even look frightened by my threat. In fact, he looked unimpressed, something that angered me even more. “You know, William, it’s a shame she’s never dated a man who has shown her an ounce of respect. I could change that for her. I’m sure she would be happy with me.” 

Rage shot through me like adrenaline and I didn’t know why. I didn’t care if my ex–wife dated other men, right? Maybe my anger stemmed from him daring to provoke me. All I knew was that this man wasn’t giving me what I wanted and was actively disrespecting me, and I would not stand for it. 

I roughly grabbed him by the collar, lifting him away from his desk with ease. Martin growled and grabbed me by my wrists, his glare hardening. “You need to get your priorities straight, Martin,” I told him, my voice dangerous. 

Martin sneered at me, fear absent from his voice. “Get your hands off of me,” he demanded, shoving me away. 

Tossing him one last scathing glare, I opened the door and stormed out, leaving him in his office without another word. There was no need to waste my time on this cretin any longer. 

Thankfully, I came prepared just in case Martin was going to be tight–lipped about everything. I had hired a very experienced hacker to get into the hospital’s tricky computer system to steal the information I needed. I quickly dialed his number as I slid into my car, my anger still simmering after my talk with Martin. 

“Hey. Have you found anything?” I demanded.
