Caroline’s POV:

William’s sudden appearance put me in a sour mood. I felt my stomach ache and grabbed my belly in order to ease the pain, but it hardly did anything. It was like William upsetting me had helped to trigger this pain. I’d heard stress is not good for the body, after all. 

Through the pain, I couldn’t help but recall memories of William and I that only upset me 

more. 

I could still vividly remember the days following when I’d lost my baby. I had screamed and cried at William after I’d found out that he had gone into the lake to save Sophia instead of me, his wife and mother of his child. I had asked him point blank why he hadn’t come for me, and he told me that he didn’t need to because I could swim. It was such a ridiculous response. 

Not only was the water freezing cold, but I was also pregnant and had just left the hospital. There were even plants beneath the surface that kept me tangled down. How was I expected to survive down there? If it wasn’t for us being placed right next to a hospital, I might have actually died with my baby. 

The memories of the pain I went through during that time was too overwhelming. It was all just so awful that I felt like I was suffocating on the spot. I breathed in heavily, but no matter what, it was like I wasn’t getting enough air. 

That’s when an oxygen mask slipped over my face. I opened my eyes and looked up in fear, only to see Martin’s kind visage smiling down at me. 

“Relax,” he said softly. “Just breathe, alright? Take some deep breaths.” 

I did as he asked and took in deep, steadying breaths. Slowly, my heart rate began to go down and I felt myself calming. When the mask was finally removed, I looked up at him with a smile. “Thank you, Martin,” I murmured, sitting up and giving his shoulder a gentle squeeze. 

“Hey, it’s nothing,” he murmured. “I’m just glad I was here to help.” 

It was then that I noticed large welts over Martin’s face, ones that would surely develop into bruises. I quickly put a hand on his cheek, feeling over the welts with worry. “Martin, what happened?” I asked, distraught. “Who did this?” 

He gently lowered my hand and tried to laugh off my worry. “It’s nothing. I just bumped into something and hit my head.” 

I didn’t believe him for a second. When I looked down, I noticed he was holding his stomach, as if he was in pain. I poked him in the stomach, and sure enough, he cried out in pain. I gave him a serious look and said, “Martin, please tell me the truth.” 

Martin grimaced, slowly nodding to let me know he would be truthful. “Okay, you got me. William apparently overheard some doctors talk about your case. He thought that we were lying to him about his condition, and a few punches were thrown.”

I sat up a little straighter, shocked by the revelation. “He hit you because he thought we were lying about my diagnosis?” I gasped, disbelieving William’s behavior was now bordering on psychotic. I couldn’t believe he would do such a thing to someone as sweet as Martin. “Martin, I’m so sorry you have to deal with this. He shouldn’t have done that to you.” 

Martin held up a hand, smiling softly despite his developing bruises. “Hey, it’s okay,” he replied, taking my hand and squeezing it comfortingly. “Don’t worry, we chased him off, and that’s what matters. He hasn’t found out about your diagnosis.” 

“Yet,” I sighed. “One day he will. What am I supposed to do then, Martin?”
