Caroline’s POV: 

The horrific sight of my father being wheeled into the operating room had fear gripping my heart. My father must have been terribly injured in some sort of accident to require surgery, but how? 

“Dad?” I worriedly called, hurriedly following them into the operating room to demand answers, I was swiftly halted by one of the nurses, who slipped in front of me with a raised hand. “Whoa there, ma’am. This is for medical staff only. We’re going to have to ask you to wait out here.” 

Tears sprung in my eyes at being so coldly denied Why couldn’t they understand that I needed to see him? “What happened? What’s wrong with my father?” I pleaded for answers, my voice trembling, “Please, tell me. He’s the only family I have left.” 

Donning a look of sympathy, she endeavored to answer, but was cut off when one of the doctors frantically called her name. Her sigh was strained as she threw me a condoling look Listen, I can’t answer all your questions right now, but your father has suffered a heart failure.” 

“Heart failure?” I cried, my voice cracking in despair. “How? Why? What happened to him?”

The nurse quickly placed two gentle hands on my shoulders, trying her best to ease my fraying nerves. “Ma’am, please. We’re doing all we can to help him, but I need you to take a deep breath for me and calm down.” 

How could she just ask me to calm down when my only family was dying of heart failure? A sob wracked my body as a kindly nurse led me away from the operating room and into the waiting room. “Just stay here until your father is done, alright?” she gently instructed. I didn’t have time to croak out a response before she rushed out as well. 

While pathetically holed away in the empty waiting room, my tears were neverending. How could this happen? William swore to me that he would take care of my father. Was this just another one of his callous lies? 

The surgery took many grueling hours, but for me, it lasted an eternity. I struggled with the possibility of losing my dad. With my precious baby boy gone and William’s family cruelly disowning, the only family I had left was my beloved father. Even if I died, I wanted him to live the rest of his life happily, healthily, and without fear. 

The only saving grace that calmed my nerves were the memories I had of me and my father. Even when he was stricken by grief after my mother had passed, my father had lovingly cared for me and protected me. I swore to myself that I would one day return that same love, and I would go to the ends of the Earth to make sure that he was free. 

Eventually the door creaked open and an exhausted doctor sauntered into the room. I instantly recognised him as one of the life–saving doctors that had rushed my dying father into the

“We were able to save your father,” the doctor assured me steadily, sending a wave of relief throughout my body. Sympathy flickered across his features as he hesitated to speak his next 

words. “How his condition is finicky. He’s going to need to stay in the ICU for a while.” 

“The nurse said my father had a heart failure,” I said, my voice still shaky. “How did that happen? As far as I know, my father had no history of any heart conditions.” 

The doctor carefully searched my eyes before he released a fatigued sigh. “Your father’s oxygen tube was disconnected,” he steely replied
