Billionaire's Betrayal: My Ex Beg Me To Love Him Again novel Chapter 83

Caroline’s POV:

Bursting into George’s room, I found myself face to face with the new nanny, standing by little George’s crib.

Just before I could yell at her to get away, she raised a thin finger to her lips, hushing me. Her hand ran over George’s head, who was sound asleep in her arms, no doubt having happy dreams as he lay completely ignorant of the danger around him.

“Is there something wrong, madam?” The new nanny gave me a curious, scrutinizing look.

I felt the urge to grab George and take him away from this sketchy woman, but I got a hold of myself before I could act rashly. I stamped down my temper, not wanting to lash out and alert the enemy that I was onto her. Especially when she already had the baby in her arms.

It was also important that I verify that this woman really did have cruel intentions. I couldn’t just point the finger at some poor worker who didn’t deserve it. I forced a small smile on my face as I spoke to her.

“It’s nothing,” I said at last, keeping the alarm out of my voice. “I just heard there was a new nanny and wanted to make sure George was doing alright.”

The new nanny gave me an odd look, almost as though she were evaluating me, but she said nothing in the end. As she was putting George in his crib, I inspected every little detail of this potentially dangerous woman.

She was much younger than Sandra, but she had a noticeably cold demeanor. It was as if people never smiled where she came from. I needed to know more about her if I wanted to keep a close eye on her.

“I’m Caroline,” I introduced as soon as she turned back to me. “You are?”

“Laura,” the nanny replied simply, looking at me almost as carefully as I was looking at her. Apparently I wasn’t the only paranoid one around here.

“How many years have you worked, Laura?” I inquired, tracing her every movement as she went to pick up some of George’s toys.

“A decade.” Her replies were always cold and curt, as though I were bothering her just by asking questions. “Taking care of little ones is my specialty.”

“Oh, that must be why Gerald was so ready to hand George off to you,” I guessed, attempting to appear friendly on the surface.

Laura’s gaze never waned in its suspicion, but she did appear to grow agitated by my presence. “Yes, I’m sure Mr. William will be more than pleased to see my credentials in child care. Now… is there anything else I can do for you?”

I couldn’t leave this potentially dangerous woman here alone with George, so thinking fast, I made a clever excuse for her to leave. She was a threat to both George’s security and mine. George would be far safer in my hands. “Yes, actually. Mr. William would like you to help clean out the garage.”

Laura’s face instinctually scrunched up with displeasure. “He said that to you?”
