The night of my birthday party finally arrived. I thought to myself, looking at my reflection in the full–length mirror in awe.
“I–I look like a princess!” I murmured to myself in disbelief as my gaze surveyed the gown clinging to my body like a second skin.
The long fiery red gown hugged my curves perfectly, and the bright color made my fair skin look radiant. The plunging neckline revealed a generous amount of my cleavage, but it wasn’t vulgar. Overall, the tight–fitting gown made my hips appear slimmer while the halter top enhanced the look of my shoulders, giving me a classy appearance.
The gown looked stunning, and I was proud of myself for designing it for tonight.
“You don’t just look like a princess, darling. You look more like a regal queen,” Leilani said beside me, a proud smile plastered on her lips as she surveyed me from head to toe.
From looking at my grandmother, my gaze returned to the mirror to examine my reflection
once more. I almost did not recognize the woman staring back at me. She looked
breathtakingly beautiful, clad in a fiery red gown adorned with glittering soft Swarovski
crystals that made it look as though the stars were on my feet.
I took a step forward, and my reflection did the same. Overwhelmed, a smile made its way to my lips. The woman in the mirror was indeed me! I’m not dreaming at all!
The reflection of the chandelier made my unique eyes appear like glowing gemstones.
“Look at me, darling; I have a gift for you,” Leilani softly whispered in my ear. Mildly curious, I obediently turned my head to her and watched as she gracefully drifted across the room and came to a stop in front of a large painting adorning the wall.
Is she giving me that precious painting? I wondered to myself but immediately realized it was not the gift she was talking about as she moved the painting aside, revealing a hidden
vault inside.

Though surprised, I managed to keep my mouth pressed together while watching her
punch in the right code. There was a soft click, and the vault opened.
Leilani then took a box from inside, closed the vault, and returned the painting to its original position.

Within seconds, she was back in front of me, placing the box on top of the dresser and then
opening the cover of what looked like an elegant vintage jewelry box.
Very carefully, she took out a red phoenix diadem before closing the box.
I heard a gasp. It was my own. The beautiful phoenix diadem caught me by surprise. It looked so gorgeous as the light from the chandelier made the diamonds glitter with life. I couldn’t tear my gaze away from it.
“My mother gave it to me when I was twenty–five years old. This century–old diadem is passed down to the female family member who has unique colored eyes like ours. It is always passed down during our twenty–fifth birthday.” She paused to take a breath and continued, “I couldn’t give it to Sophia because of our family tradition. However, I am lucky enough to pass this diadem on to you. And in the future, if you have a daughter or a granddaughter with unique eyes like ours, you shall pass this on to them too,” she explained. 2
My eyes went wide in surprise. “Y–you’re passing the crown on to me?” I gasped, staring at my grandmother in disbelief.
“I am. From now on, it will be yours,” she replied.
Overwhelmed, I was unable to speak for a long while.
Leilani gently placed the diadem on top of my head. It fit perfectly, as though it was meant
for me.
With eyes burning with fire, almost surpassing the glittering gems from the tiara proudly sitting on my head, I turned to the mirror and looked at myself.
The diamond phoenix diadem and my fiery red gown looked magnificent together.

“Happy birthday, Lilibeth. This night is yours. Show everyone how much of a queen you are,” Leilani pressed a soft kiss on my cheeks. Afterward, she wiped the tears from the corners of her eyes.
“The guests are already waiting downstairs, honey,” she reminded me.
The mention of the guests made my heart flip inside my ribcage. Swallowing hard, I grabbed my masquerade mask from the top of the dresser and walked to the door with soft, graceful steps.
Will he attend the party?.The thought made my breath hitch in my throat and made my
heartbeat race.

I cleared my thoughts and told myself that just for tonight, I must stop thinking of him and focus on my birthday party.
I opened the door and stepped out. Leilani walked behind me like a regal queen in her blue gown. Despite her age, she could put anyone to shame with her beauty and elegance. Her real age wasn’t showing on her face; anyone could mistake her for Sophia’s older sister.
Speaking of Sophia, my mother was already waiting for me outside the door. She was wearing an off–shoulder amethyst gown that enhanced her slim figure. She looked like a model about to walk down a long stage–gorgeous and breathtaking at the same time. I wished at that moment I had the same confidence she possessed.
“Happy birthday, Lilibeth!” she greeted me, landing a kiss on both of my cheeks.
“Thank you, Mom.”
“You look gorgeous!” my mother exclaimed in awe.
“And so do you, Mom,” I told her.
“I couldn’t agree more,” said Philip, popping out of nowhere. “Your mother looks great indeed! I’m falling in love with her once more,” he added with a grin before shifting his gaze to my grandmother. “You look stunning too, Mother.”
