“You still love your ex–husband, don’t you?” Cain Lawrence asked quietly. But the words sounded more like a statement than a question to me.

We were on our way home to Phoenix Manor when Cain spoke for the first time after leaving the fancy restaurant. He’d been noticeably quiet while we were dining. But despite his silence, I could feel him watching me silently, lost in his thoughts.

The remark rendered me speechless for a good thirty seconds. Finally recovering my scattered wits, I slowly turned to him, but Cain didn’t look back. His intent eyes were

focused on the highway as he drove.

“Why did you suddenly ask?” I inquired, wondering why he had made the remark out of

nowhere.

“Because I saw the way you looked at your ex–husband when you thought I wasn’t

watching you,” he whispered. I caught the hint of pain in his voice. A sudden surge of guilt rushed inside me.

“Let’s not talk about my ex–husband, Cain,” I pleaded. The topic made me too

uncomfortable.

“We should,” he insisted plainly.

“Why?” I quietly asked, even though I had an idea why he wanted to pursue the topic.

“Because I can’t force someone who has been in love with her ex for over a year to love me

back,” Cain replied rather truthfully.

My gaze dropped to my lap. Unable to say a word, I fell into an endless silence. When Cain spoke again, I forced myself to look at him.

“I want to hear the truth from your own lips. Are you still in love with him, Lily?” he asked calmly.

Right at that moment, I knew he was about to surrender. However, “surrender” wasn’t the right term to describe it. “Letting go” was the word that perfectly fit the scenario.

“I am a warrior of my own life, Lily. I know when to stop fighting a war I couldn’t win. Even though you don’t love me back and I failed to make you forget him, at least I tried. I never regret trying because of that.” He forced a sad smile onto his lips to conceal the pain consuming him inside, but he failed to hide it; his eyes spoke of pain that even a thousand words could never describe.

I felt bad inside for hurting someone who really cared for me. There was seriously something wrong with me.

“I hope nothing changes between us after this, Cain,” I told him in a barely audible whisper.

“Nothing will change between us, Lily,” he promised, and I sighed with relief.

“I really want you to be happy with someone who deserves you. Tears fell from my eyes at his words. He really did care for me. The woman he would

“Promise?” He lifted his pinky finger. Without hesitation, I linked mine with his to seal our

promise.

“I promise,” I whispered.

Despite the gravity of the situation, he began to smile. The genuine smile on his lips was so

infectious that I couldn’t help but smile back.

Cain Lawrence returned his gaze to the road and concentrated on driving.

The inside of the car became quiet once more, but it was not as awkward as it had been before. In fact, we both felt at ease in each other’s company.

The heaviness in my chest disappeared. I leaned into the leather seat contentedly, knowing I didn’t have to worry about how Cain felt now since we had made a promise to each other.
