My eyes opened, and I found myself staring at my mother’s worried face. There were large bags under her eyes, indicating she hadn’t slept well last night.

“I’m glad you’re finally awake,” she whispered, teary–eyed. She captured my hands and wrapped them tightly around her own. “You’ve given us all a heart attack after learning you’re in the hospital. We’ve been terrified out of our wits, but we’re all glad you’re safe

now.”

“How’s my daughter?” The words emerged from my lips, and Mom assured me that Isabelle was alright. Cassandra and Lia were at the house to babysit my daughter.

A sigh of relief escaped my lips. I had nothing to worry about then, I thought to myself.

“Are you feeling okay? Is there any part of your body hurting right now?” Mom asked, and

in response, my hand went to my head. For the first time, I realized it was wrapped in a bandage.

As if a button had been pushed in my mind, memories came rushing back to me. I clearly remembered every detail, particularly Natalia arriving at the scene with a gun in her hand

and pointing it at me.

The ear–shattering sound of the gun still rang in my ears, and I could also feel the painful sensation of the bullet grazing the side of my head.

The flow of memories made me shudder. Reliving those moments in my mind made my

throat go dry, and I asked my mother for a glass of water.

Sophia let go of my hand. Opening the refrigerator on the side of the room, she took out a bottle of mineral water, opened the lid, and handed it to me.

“You are so lucky, Lily. Natalia missed when she shot you,” Mom said, watching me take large gulps of water from the bottle. “You’re even luckier that you didn’t inflict any further injury on yourself when you collapsed on the cement pavement. The only injury you have right now is a mild graze on the side of your head,” Mom informed me, and I was indeed

Before Natalia fired the gun, I almost thought I wouldn’t make it, but God is so good; He gave me yet another chance.

“Is Natalia caught?” I quietly asked Mom, swallowing hard as I waited for her to answer.

Mom took a deep breath, as though she had a lot of explaining to do. Grabbing a chair, she sat down and began her explanation.

“She was never caught,” she informed me, and my shoulders fell in disappointment. I would never be at peace unless she was behind bars for what she did to me.

“Why? Did she escape? Has she left the country?” I blurted, my questions louder than

intended.

“No, she didn’t.”

I looked at Mom with wide, questioning eyes, waiting for her to continue.

“As she was escaping from the crime scene, her car malfunctioned, and the brakes refused to work while she was passing an intersection–an accident–prone area–so she had an

accident.”

My eyes widened in shock. “W–what happened to her then?”

“The car she was driving collided with a truck. She was brought to the hospital. She survived the accident, but the twins she was carrying didn’t make it.”

My sympathies went to the poor angels.

I seriously didn’t care about what happened to Natalia after she shot me and escaped, but I couldn’t imagine what her poor babies went through. Because of her actions, two lives had been lost. It could have been three, but I miraculously survived, although I wished the twins had survived too. It was not easy to lose a child. I couldn’t imagine myself losing Isabelle. Just the thought made me want to die of grief and heartbreak.

“Did the authorities catch her?”

Sophia shook her head again. This time, I felt even more dismayed and disappointed.

“She escaped,” Sophia confirmed.

How could they let a criminal like her escape? I thought to myself, infuriated. She had some serious loose screws! God knows what she would do next time. She should have been locked

in a mental institution!

Mom sensed the stress overflowing inside me and touched my arms, trying to give me the comfort I needed right now.

“You don’t need to worry about Natalia anymore… She’s dead.”

My mouth dropped open in shock and disbelief. Minutes passed without me saying a word.

“D–dead?” I gasped, wondering if I had misheard Mom’s words.

“She was unable to accept her children’s death. After burying them in a cemetery, she drove off near a cliff and jumped, instantly killing herself. Her body was found yesterday

evening.”

“How could that happen so fast, Mom? I’ve been unconscious for a day, and a lot of things happened.”

“You’ve been unconscious for three days straight, darling. That’s why you feel that way,” Mom told me. Before I could react, the loud commotion in the hallway outside my room

caught our attention.

“Just let me in!” a familiar voice thundered in the hallway. My gaze turned to the door, knowing my ex–husband was outside.

What was that jerk doing here? I thought to myself, a deep scowl crossing my temples.

“No one is allowed to see the patient except her family,” a male voice replied. It was the family bodyguard.

“I just want to check if she’s alright! Goddammit,” Grey responded, almost shouting.

They were arguing loudly, and I could clearly hear the words they threw at each other.

Maybe he would just leave afterward, I told myself.

Just as I was about to ignore the commotion in the hallway, a familiar voice butted in.

“What the hell are you doing here, Grey?” Luis’s voice thundered in the hallway. It was followed by the confrontational voices of my other brothers telling him to go away.

“I’m not leaving unless I’see Lily,” Grey stood firm.

The jerk! I mused under my breath, and Mom touched my arm to calm me down.

“Your wound will reopen if you strain yourself,” Mom reminded me.

I took a deep breath, then released it in a deep sigh. I repeated the inhale and exhale

process until some of my stress disappeared.
