"What?" Heidi protested.
After Edward went to Barbara's study for a video conference and took Janice along with him, Heidi returned from the balcony.
The moment she heard that Barbara wanted her to learn a new crochet technique from Janice, her first reaction was defiance. She was supposed to learn from Janice?
Seeing her strong reaction, Barbara's expression grew colder.
Back when Heidi was working in cultural preservation, Barbara had helped her quite a bit. She used to think Heidi was just a spirited young woman, but now, she seemed immature.
Compared to Janice, who was always so calm and composed, Barbara found herself favoring Janice more and more.
"If you think it's inappropriate, then I'll find someone else," Barbara said coolly.
Noticing Barbara's displeasure, Heidi quickly replied, "I'll learn!"
She gritted her teeth. "I'm happy to help you out, Mrs. Moore!"
"Thank you in advance. Once the restoration is done, I'll personally cook a meal for you. Of course, you'll also be properly compensated for your work."
Heidi lowered her head, her smile a bit strained. The last thing she wanted was to be Janice's student!
From nearby, Valentina's sharp eyes caught something. "Heidi, what happened to your face?"
Heidi touched her cheek. She had actually come here today to complain but almost forgot about it.
She quickly put on a hurt expression. "It's nothing serious. I just… I was worried that Ms. Smith might not like me and that we wouldn't be able to work together."
"Not like you?" Valentina was puzzled.
"It's because she was the one who hit me."
Barbara was surprised. "What? Why?"
"Maybe she misunderstood something… After all, I've always been close to Edward since we were kids. She probably got the wrong idea. But it's okay," Heidi said, looking pitiful.
Her words were followed by an awkward silence. Myra and Valentina quietly sipped their drinks, not commenting.
Barbara paused, then went to get some cream.
"Thank you, Mrs. Moore."
"There must be a misunderstanding here. I'll ask Edward about it later," Barbara assured her. "I'll get to the bottom of this and give you a proper explanation. I apologize on Janice's behalf."
Hearing this, Heidi felt even more upset. Wasn't this just another way of siding with Janice?
Even so, she forced a smile. "It's alright, Mrs. Moore."
When the food delivery arrived, Myra pulled Edward aside.
