Two sharp knocks echoed at the door.
"Simon? It's me."
Was it Simon's mother outside?
Elsie quickly adjusted her clothes and rushed to answer the door. With a faint smile, she opened it. "Hello, Mrs. Fitzgerald and Ms. Fitzgerald."
Helena and Sarah barely glanced at her as they brushed past and entered the room.
"Bring our things inside."
As the middle-aged man hauled in a pile of bags and packages, Elsie gritted her teeth, battling to keep her composure. She had paid for the suite, which was worth a month's rent, yet Helena and Sarah acted as though they owned the place, showing no respect or consideration.
Elsie turned and walked straight to look for Simon.
Once the door was closed behind her, she confronted him. "Your mom and sister are here, and they're hauling in all their stuff. What's going on? Are they planning to stay?"
"The suite has two other rooms. Just make space for them temporarily. Why are you making such a big deal about it?" Simon replied casually.
"Simon, I paid for this suite. You should've at least asked me first. And if you're giving them the other rooms, where am I supposed to stay?"
"Aren't you staying with me?"
Elsie felt a pang in her chest. After everything with Amelia, she wasn't sure she wanted to share a room with Simon anymore.
She quickly came up with a lie. "I'm on my period, so we can't sleep together."
"I'm not going to touch you," Simon responded, his voice filled with impatience.
Elsie pressed on with her excuse, saying, "It's not about whether you touch me or not. You know the old saying—sleeping together during a lady's period could affect your luck. Whether it's true or not, it's better to be safe. With only one room left, they'll simply have to make do."
Simon frowned and gave her lower abdomen a contemptuous glance as if she were something distasteful.
Stepping forward, she cut her off and said, "Mrs. Fitzgerald, let me make one thing absolutely clear—Simon is only able to restart his company because of me. The money I invested, the goods my father supplied, and the seamstresses I secured for him are the sole reasons he's back on his feet.
"If you'd rather see him lose everything and end up back on the streets, be my guest."
Among all the women in Simon's life, Elsie was the only one who dared to stand up to Helena.
Helena's chest rose and fell with fury. "H-How dare you—"
Elsie didn't give her the chance to finish. "Let me remind you—I'm not Janice, and I'm not Amelia. If you think you can walk all over me like you did with them, you're in for a rude awakening. Try making my life difficult, and I guarantee yours will be even worse. Do you understand?"
For the first time, Helena was at a loss for words. No woman in Simon's life had ever dared to speak to her this way.
Nonetheless, Elsie's words hit where it hurt the most—Helena's and Sarah's comfortable lives were entirely tied to Simon's success.
Helena's eyes burned with fury as she shot Elsie a withering glare.
