"Janice!"
At the factory gate, Simon stood sharply dressed, looking nothing like a man who had gone bankrupt. He waved at Janice with a bright, almost exaggerated smile while holding something in his hand.
Janice frowned and shot her bodyguards a look.
"Don't stop me! I just came to bring Janice something."
His loud voice turned heads, drawing the attention of passersby.
Janice sighed. "What do you want?"
"Janice, this is from your favorite bakery. I got up early to wait in line for it, and it's still warm. Try it?"
But the sight of that familiar bread didn't stir any nostalgia in Janice, only disgust. All it did was remind her of how foolish she had been back then. She chuckled. "You think I love this bread?"
Taking the package from his hand, she unwrapped it, tore off a piece, and shoved it straight into Simon's mouth without hesitation.
Audrey, watching from the side, was stunned. The way she did it… didn't look like she was feeding someone she liked.
Simon was just as caught off guard, but he forced himself to chew, struggling with the dry, dense texture. It was hard to swallow.
"Does it taste good?" Janice asked. "Can you even get it down?"
The bread was anything but soft. It was tough, dry, and a chore to chew. Back then, she had eaten it simply because it was cheap and filling. They had been poor. She had lied to Simon, saying she loved it, and he had actually believed her.
Janice tossed the rest of the bread at his feet, pulled her hand back, and stepped away.
"Don't bring things like this to me again. I'm not stupid. I'm not going to leave a good life behind just to go back to those miserable days when I worked myself to the bone and still wasn't respected."
