Janice's eyelashes fluttered as she looked at Edward. "Do you know what marriage means?"
"It means I'll spend the rest of my life with the woman in front of me. For better or worse, it'll always be you. No matter how rough things get, I'll be there to protect you. And I'm ready for that."
His honesty caught her off guard and left her momentarily speechless. "I… I don't believe you've never dated before," she said
"Why not?" Edward straightened up. "I have high standards."
Janice raised an eyebrow.
"I don't settle for just anyone."
She didn't know how to respond to that.
Edward kept his face straight. "I mean it."
"Okay." Janice cleared her throat. "You've got the looks, the career, the background. Of course, you mean it."
Edward smiled and lightly pinched her earlobe. After a few seconds of silence, he said softly, "That's why I like you."
Her face flushed instantly. "Go away! I'm going to sleep."
She was exhausted. The past few days had worn her down.
Edward waited until Janice lay down before leaving the bedroom. As soon as he stepped into the living room, he noticed Barbara standing there with a scrutinizing look. "What's wrong, Mom?"
She crossed her arms. "I heard you're learning to crochet."
"Yeah."
Barbara raised a brow. "Why?"
"To make a wedding gown."
And yet, there were always those who foolishly tested his limits—like Simon, standing stubbornly at the gated community entrance.
…
He frowned. "I'm not selling flowers."
He thought she was a customer.
Marie lowered her gaze. "Don't recognize me?"
Simon finally looked up and studied her face. "Marie?"
