Broken Memories, Intertwined Hearts novel Chapter 329

Ethan and Joy were standing on the balcony, with Joy staring at Ethan in silence for a while.

Ethan seemed a bit impatient and asked, "What's on your mind?"

Joy gave a bitter smile and said, "I'm sorry."

Ethan cut her off, "You don't have to apologize. I'm not in the mood for that right now."

Hearing this, Joy fell silent for a moment before saying, "Although you don't want to hear my apologies, I still need to say sorry. You put me in a very important position, but I didn't live up to the responsibility and even caused a severe blow to the company's interests, making you lose the person you love. But seeing you and Izzy so happy now, I feel relieved. I think Leila would be comforted too."

Ethan didn't respond, and Joy continued, "I guess what you really want to know is about that incident. I did lie. The blueprints weren't switched by me, but by someone else. I had planned to check them again before submitting them to the engineering department, but my mom fell down the stairs all of a sudden, so I had to rush home and didn't think twice before handing in the blueprints."

Ethan remained silent, just watching her. Joy took a deep breath and went on, "During that time, my mom was hospitalized, and I was busy taking care of her. I wasn't very attentive to the project, and by the time I realized something was wrong, it was too late. I was going to report it to you so you could halt the construction, but then I received a text from a stranger who told me to keep my nose out of it if I wanted my mom to live. That's when I found out that my mom's fall wasn't an accident, it was all planned to distract me."

"Why didn't you say anything at the time?" Ethan asked.

Joy replied, "I wanted to, but they had ways to keep me quiet. Whether my mom was in the hospital or at home, they always had a chance to hurt her. Resisting them caused my mom to suffer more misfortunes, ending up with Alzheimer's. How could I possibly fight back? I was scared." Joy covered her face with her hands in agony.

"Was you going to prison also their arrangement?" Ethan asked.

Joy nodded, choking up at the memory, "Yes, it was the only way I could keep my mom alive."

"Do you know who they are?" Ethan asked.

"I don't know, I've never seen him. He always contacted me via payphones, each time with a different number. I tried to trace the numbers, but they were all public phone numbers from all over A City. I couldn't even figure out where he usually hung out, let alone who he was." Joy said.

Ethan furrowed his brows and asked, "If you heard his voice again, would you be able to recognize it?"

"Yes." Joy answered without hesitation. That voice was like a nightmare to her. Even after all these years, she still remembered it clearly. It was those words that changed her life. She used to be an admired architect, but ended up spending three years in prison. Even after being released, she couldn't pursue her favorite job and had to work as an assistant to Jeffery.

All of this was orchestrated by those people.

Ethan comforted her, "Don't worry, I've known about this for a while, but lacked concrete evidence. When the time is right, I'll help you get your revenge."

"Okay." Joy said.

Ethan curiously asked, "Why didn't you mention this before, but want to now?" He couldn't understand what Joy was thinking.
