Ines stood by the window, took a glance, then said with a laugh, "Ethan's holding her and it seems she's stopped crying."
"That's good. This little one was born premature and had a scare. She hasn't had a peaceful day since she was born." Emma voiced, a little sad.
"Don't worry, the culprit has been caught. This won't happen again." Ines said.
Emma's face darkened at these words. Ines knew Emma was going soft and couldn't help but say, "I know she's your birth mom, but now's not the time to go soft. Shirley's completely lost it now. If she's out, you and Jasmine won't have a moment's peace. Plus, she killed our father. My car accident a few years back was her doing and your near-disability is directly linked to her."
"Don't worry. Once it goes to trial, I'll testify. Those who do wrong need to face the punishment." Emma said.
Hearing this, Ines relaxed slightly, "I'm glad you understand."
A determined light flashed in Emma's eyes. The incident from the previous night still scared her. Now the house was empty except for a couple of servants. If Jasmine's crying hadn't alerted everyone, she might have already been whisked away. Who knew what would've happened then.
"Did you hurt anywhere else apart from your foot last night?" Ines asked.
Emma shook her head. "No, luckily the cops were there. We got Jasmine back without too much struggle."
Seeing that Emma was fine, Ines got ready to leave, "That's good. Rest well, I'm gonna head home."
It was nearly lunchtime. Emma said, "Ines, you hardly ever come home. Stay and have lunch with us. There's always someone cooking."
"Alright." Ines said.
Emma smiled, satisfied. "If you're tired, you can rest in your room. I've kept it just the way it was."
Ines nodded and lay down. Just then, Ethan came in with Jasmine. Jasmine, unusually awake, stared around with her big eyes. Ines found this quite amusing, "Why'd you bring Jasmine here? Her nursery's on the second floor."
Ethan sighed, a bit helpless, "She seems to be attached to me. She starts crying the moment I put her down. I've got no choice but to hold her."
"You asked for it. You're too good at winning over kids. Just keep holding her." As she finished, Ines noticed a crescent-shaped necklace around Jasmine's neck. It was a gift from Hunter before he died, which brought a pang of sadness to her eyes.
Ethan, too busy with the kid, didn't notice Ines's change. He just chuckled and said, "Well, I guess I'll have to hold her. It's no big deal, right Jasmine?"
After saying this, he bent down to kiss Jasmine's forehead, then started playing with her again.
Ines had caught a bit of shuteye on the plane and wasn't too tired. She just stared at the ceiling, lost in thought. Even though it wasn't that long ago, things had changed a lot. She remembered the time she came home and saw the old pictures with Ethan. It was the first time she saw a vivid version of her past self, and she was moved. She saw a father's selfless love for his daughter.
It was the same room, but her father was gone. The house seemed to have lost its liveliness without him. It would've been such a joy if he was here to put the necklace he bought on Jasmine. And if he was here, no one would dare bully Jasmine. Last night's incident would've never happened.
After lunch, Ethan and Ines were about to leave when Alan called. He said Shirley was making a fuss at the police station and insisted on seeing Emma. He asked if they wanted to see her.
After hanging up, Ethan told Emma, "Emma, Shirley wants to see you. The police are asking if you're willing to see her. If you are, they can arrange for it this afternoon."
Eda was visibly upset, "What's there to see? That woman must be wanting you to help her out. This isn't as simple as it seems. She's got no shame. She did such a terrible thing last night and now she dares to see you. Emma, don't go. She might use you again."
Ines was silent for a while before telling Eda, "Eda, Shirley is Emma's mother after all. Let Emma decide whether she wants to go or not. We shouldn't interfere."
Eda sighed, "I just can't accept it. Which mother does this? When she can't make ends meet, she tries to take her granddaughter away and threatens her own daughter. Only she could do something like that."
Emma was silent for a moment, then said, "If she wants to see me, I can go see her and see what she has to say. Eda, don't worry, I won't just take her words at face value."
"Alright, Ines has a point. This decision should ultimately be yours. Just remember, your leg is still healing and the doctor has advised you to take it easy." Eda said.
"I'll be fine. I think we have a wheelchair at home, and you can wheel me in when the time comes." Emma said.
"Ethan and I don't have anything urgent this afternoon. We can drop you guys off." Ines offered.
