Ines stared intently at Aiden, who seemed to realize that his earlier demeanor had been rather schadenfreude. He awkwardly covered his mouth to cough lightly, as if to break the tension in the room.
Ines decided to cut to the chase, avoiding unnecessary small talk. “Are you done? If you are, please leave. The elevator is to the left when you exit.”
Aiden remained still, which prompted Silas to assertively warn him, “If you don’t leave now, I’ll call security. Don’t feel awkward then.”
“Silas, Izzy, I’ve thought it over. I want to remarry Emma. I want Jasmine to grow up in a normal family environment,” Aiden confessed, and his head slightly bowed.
“Go tell that to Emma and see if she’ll even listen to you. Marriage is not a game, and you can’t just decide to marry or divorce at whim. How do you even have the audacity to say such things?” Silas retorted, pointing accusingly at Aiden. He felt that Aiden was really shameless.
Ines also found the situation amusing and couldn’t help but burst into laughter. “Aiden, are you joking? Jasmine was born by the time you two divorced. Didn’t you think about your own daughter then? Isn’t it too late to bring this up now? Your attitude makes me question whether Emma was right to accuse you of being jealous of her success. You’ve been silent all this time after the divorce, and now that someone is pursuing Emma, you’ve decided to reappear.”
Aiden was taken aback. “Izzy, that’s not what I meant. I was immature then and didn’t think things through. That’s why I got a divorce from Emma so quickly. Also, Emma was too eager, which made me act impulsively.”
Aiden tried to explain, but no one was willing to believe him.
Ines spoke up in a stern tone, “Aiden, you’re a thirty-year-old adult. It’s not about being immature; it’s about not taking responsibility. You always listen to your parents, have no opinion of your own, and have become a pawn in their hands.”
What did Emma see in such a man? Ines remembered that he was not like this when he was younger. He had bravely confessed his feelings to her then. But as he grew older, he became weaker.
Aiden was left speechless and blushing by Ines’ words. He knew that everything Ines said was true. On matters related to Emma and Jasmine, he had indeed been very cowardly. It was only now that he had realized that he did not dislike Emma. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have been entangled with her for so many years.
Now, he found it unbearable to even have dinner with women he didn’t like, but it was never like that with Emma. Although sometimes he was annoyed by her clinginess and possessiveness, he never truly despised her. However, this kind of affection had Emma taking the initiative for a long time, so much so that he had become accustomed to it as a matter of course, forgetting to give and work on his marriage.
