Harlan’s chest tightened the more innocent Elaine looked. She was just nineteen. Happiness for girls her age could be as simple as candy, chocolate. a pretty dress, or expensive skincare 

But for Elaine Her happiness was leaving this family. To her, leaving the Years family was happiness itself. 

Harlan couldn’t explain why, but the thought struck a chord deep wahan him. He wondered. Why would I feel this ache for Elaine of all people? After all, haven’t I always despised her? 

What about the rest of the brothers? If they see Elaine like this, will they feel the same pang of guilt and sorrow?

Elaine’s past feelings for Finley, the eldest son of the powerful Scout family, were no secret. To outsiders, her ability to murry into such a prominer family as an adopted daughter of the Yeats family was sheer luck.

Elaine massaged her temples and replied. “Yes, that’s the one.”
