Chapter 52
Laine was besileid against Grace’s chest like a lazy kitten, her grandmother gently parting her back to lull her to sleep. It was as if the entire world. had quieted down
Elaine nuzzled her cheek against Grace’s warm embrace, feeling a comfort she hadn’t felt in years. This was what a grandmother’s hug was supposed to feel like–safe and full of love
Grace looked down at the girl us her arms, her heart aching once again. How could a child be so endearing yet so full of scars? Every tune Elaine mentioned her brothers, Grace’s tears would spill over. She vowed to make up for all the love Elaine had been deprived of, a thousand times over.
As for those who had failed her, they would face their reckoning
Meanwhile, Kingsley sat on the sofa, his laptop balanced on his knees as he worked. Though his eyes were on the screen, he was subtly keeping the two women in the room company–one was the woman he would marry, and the other was his beloved grandmother
Every now and then, his gaze would flicker toward Elaine, a ripple of warmth and tenderness surfacing in his otherwise cold eyes. Not that Kingsley himself seemed aware of thas subtle detail
The villa evaded an air of peace and serenity
About half an hour later, when Kingsley had finished his work. Grace glanced at him her eyes gleaming with mischief.
“Kingsley, can’t you see Elaine has fallen asleep? Take her to your room, you blockheaded man!” Grace scolded, shaking her head: “Honestly, it’s a miracle you even have a fiancee. You need to start pulling your wright”
Grace thought smugly. If I hadn’t taken one look at Elune and decided to play matchmaker, thus fool wouldn’t have a wife at 25—he’d still be single
Hearing Grace’s words, Kingsley’s usually emotionless eyes betrayed a flicker of helplessness.
His gaze shifted to the girl in Grace’s arms. Her lashes trembled slightly, her lips soft and rosy, drawing his attention despite himself.
Under the warm light, her skin looked impossibly delicate, a vision of perfection
The thought made Kingsley’s body tense with heat, and he quickly looked away, feeling a surge of discomfort
Elame, of course, was only pretending to sleep.
Without saying much. Kingsley walked over and gently scooped her up from Grace’s arms.
It was his first time carrying a woman and the intimate contact made him uncharacteristically uneasy
But as he held her, his eyes deepened. Elaine’s frail figure curled up against him, her petite frame delicate and vulnerable. Her tiny collarbones peeked out, making her look even more fragile. Kingsley couldn’t help but worry that even the slightest pressure from his hands might hurt her.
“What are you standing there for?” Grace teased with a laugh. “Take Elaine to your room. Her room isn’t ready yet‘
Kingsley sighed inwardly. “What a cunning old woman.
He shot Grace a meaningful glance, but she feigned innocence, casually sending back into her seat as though nothing was amiss.
“Kingsley.” Elaine murmured, her voice soft as she playfully stuck out her tongue. The sight of her made Kingsley’s heart clench, a wave of heat mushing through his veins and pooling in his throat.
Ha Adam’s apple bobbed as he swallowed, las vouce dropping to a husky tone. “Be good”
“Mm” the responded the corners of her lips curving upward.
Kinley laid her down on the bed, his gaze lingering on her for a moment. The heat in his chest swelled again, a sensation he had never experienced before
jame as having the entire world.
As the space between them grew warmer, their fear inchard closer together.
