Suzy understood exactly what Hawk was implying, but she couldn’t bring herself to believe

Her aunt was gone–she had died in her arms. How could that possibly be a lie? 

Seeing the doubt flicker across her face, Hawk chuckled lightly and continued, “I get it. It seems impossible. Your aunt passed away, so how could she be involved in anything after that? Maybe the resemblance between Tanya and your aunt is just a coincidence. After all, plenty of people look alike in this world. 

“And besides, it couldn’t be her. She’s your family–no matter what, she wouldn’t have done something like that. Plus, the timeline doesn’t add up. 

Tanya is twenty now, which means her mother would’ve been pregnant with her during the time your family was killed. But when your aunt brought you to your mentor back then, she wasn’t pregnant. So, it’s unlikely there’s any connection.” 

He paused for effect before adding, “Of course, I’d never doubt your aunt. I just thought I’d point it out. The resemblance is striking, though.”

Hawk leaned in slightly, his tone turning more deliberate. “I just didn’t want you to overthink it. After all, your aunt did deceive you once before.” 

Suzy’s expression remained impassive as he finished his long–winded theory. “Are you done?” 

Hawk recognized the dismissal for what it was but wasn’t offended. “I’ve said what I needed to say. Just thought I’d ask–do you need my help with anything? I’ve got plenty of free time and would love to make life a little easier for my Junior. 

Without hesitation, Suzy declined. “I appreciate the offer, but I’ve got a lot to take care of. See yourself out.” 

Hawk shrugged, taking the rejection in stride. “Fair enough. I’ll leave you to it, then.” 

Once he was gone, Suzy returned to the lab, but her thoughts were far from settled. 

She hated to admit it, but doubt had started creeping in. Hawk’s words struck a chord because they weren’t entirely baseless. 

Her aunt had deceived her before, and that deception had left scars. If it weren’t for that, she would have trusted her aunt unconditionally.
