Claude smirked, his lips curling with disdain. “Do you really think I’d believe you?” 

“I’m telling the truth!” Charlotte protested, her voice desperate. “After everything I’ve been through, I’ve lost all desire for revenge. I just want to live out the rest of my life in peace. Please, just this once, help me! 

Claude tilted his head, his expression icy. “This is the first time you’ve ever begged me for anything.” 

Then, his hand loosened from her throat, and his voice dropped to a deadly calm. “Too bad it’s already too late.”

Without hesitation, and to avoid any chance of Suzy discovering what he’d done, Claude pulled a silenced pistol from his pocket and fired a single shot into Charlotte’s chest. 

He watched her take her final breath, her lifeless body crumpling to the ground. Only after deliberately leaving something behind did he turn and walk away.

The place where Charlotte had been held was some distance from the villa, so Suzy frowned at the urgency in his tone, “what happened?”

“What?” Suzy thought she must have misheard “Say that again!” 

“The guards watching Charlotte called me,” Allen said, his tone grave. “They hadn’t heard anything from her for a while and got worried, so they went in to check. When they opened the door, she was lying on the ground, surrounded by a pool of blood!” 

“Suicide?” 

“No,” Allen replied firmly. “Murder. The guards at the door swear they didn’t leave their post, and no one entered or exited, but Charlotte was shot in the chest!” 

“I’m on my way. 

Hanging up, Suzy immediately drove off. 

Halfway there, while waiting at a red light, she spotted Hawk heading in the opposite direction. He rolled down his window and called out, “Junior, where are you headed?” 

She glanced at him briefly, her tone flat. “I have something to handle.” 

“What’s wrong? You look anxious. Need my help?” 

“No need.” 

As soon as the light turned green, Suzy accelerated, leaving Hawk behind. 

In her rearview mirror, she noticed Hawk make a U–turn and start following her.
