No matter how resolute Claude’s words had been moments ago, seeing Suzy truly about to harm herself broke through his defenses, 

In an instant, he bent down, snatched a small stone from the ground, and hurled it at her. The stone struck her wrist, sending the knife clattering to the floor. 

His eyes were red with emotion as he fixed his gaze on her. “If you hadn’t met Dylan back then, would you have chosen me?” 

If they’d never been separated, if they’d stayed together, would it have been him that Suzy fell in love with, instead of Dylan? 

Suzy hesitated. She knew the truth would be unbearable for him, especially in his current state. But even so, she didn’t want to lie to him. 

“No,” she said, her voice calm but unwavering. “To me, you’ve always been like an older brother. Even if Dylan had never been in the picture, there would have been someone else. What’s happened between us has nothing to do with Dylan.” 

Claude let out a bitter laugh, but tears streamed from his eyes as he spoke. “Suzy, you keep saying you think of me as a brother, but would you treat your brother this cruelly? Cruel enough that, even now, you can’t give me one white lie? Not even a single lie to spare me?” Over twenty years of love, and not even one comforting falsehood in return. 

“Love isn’t about lies,” Suzy said softly, unable to meet his gaze. 

His eyes were filled with too many emotions–grief, agony, resentment, torment. 

She knew what he had endured all these years. She knew the depth of his feelings and the pain he’d carried. But she couldn’t give him what he wanted. 

And she didn’t want him to continue down this destructive path. 

“Claude, let go of this, of me,” she said gently. “Let yourself go. I’m not the kind of woman worth sacrificing your entire life for.” 

His entire existence had been consumed by his feelings for her, so much so that he couldn’t see the world beyond her. He didn’t realize that there was another woman in this world who loved him deeply. 

“You have a child,” Suzy said, her voice measured and deliberate. “Avalon had a daughter for you. She’s five now–a sweet, beautiful little girl.” 

“What did you say?” Claude froze, disbelief washing over his face. 

“Avalon had a daughter with you…” Suzy said, pulling out her phone. She brought up a photo of a young girl and held it out. “Look, this is your daughter. She’s five years old now,
