Suzy hesitated for a moment but ultimately decided against telling Timothy the truth—that Charlotte was already dead.
She feared he wouldn’t be able to handle it. “I don’t know.”
“Don’t know, or don’t want to tell me?” Timothy sneered.
“Suzy, everything you’ve just said—was it all a lie? Is it because you don’t want me to be with Charlotte?
“Her disappearance… is it connected to you? Yes, that’s it! You’re involved in her disappearance. After all, everything Dylan has done has always been for you!
“Now that Dylan is in trouble, you’re using this as an opportunity to spin such a story, all so I’ll give up looking for Charlotte!”
Timothy’s voice grew louder and angrier with every word, his face twisting with rage as he pointed a finger at her.
“Suzy, I’m your father. All I want is to be with the woman I love. Why can’t you accept that?
“If your mother were still alive, I’d understand you wanting to protect her memory. But your mother has been gone for years. Do you really expect me to spend the rest of my life alone?”
Suzy couldn’t believe how things had turned. Even after all she had said, Timothy still doubted her.
“So, no matter what I do, in your eyes, it’s all just to stop you from being with Charlotte?”
“Isn’t it?” Timothy retorted, his tone dripping with sarcasm.
“I’ll say it again: I’m going to be with Charlotte. Whether you agree or not, it doesn’t matter. I’ve made up my mind. There’s no one else for me but Charlotte!”
For a brief moment earlier, Timothy had wavered. He almost believed Suzy’s words. But then he thought it through again.
Charlotte was skilled in medicine. Things that were impossible for others were within her reach.
If she had managed to get pregnant, it was likely because she had taken some kind of drug that enabled her to conceive at her age.
Yes, that must be it.
