“That’s exactly Charlotte’s brilliance,” Suzy said with a bitter smile.
“Every time someone investigates her, they find no connection. But what happens later? It’s always a different story.”
She laughed at herself, the sound laced with self-mockery.
“I lived with Charlotte for so many years. Before I revealed my true identity, everyone thought I had no ties to her either. Her greatest skill is her ability to hide. If not for that, I wouldn’t have been fooled for so many years.”
Thinking about the years of deception, Suzy couldn’t help but feel like a fool.
If she had been just a little smarter, Charlotte’s schemes would have fallen apart long ago.
And then there was Claude.
Between the two of them, one manipulated her through family ties, the other through friendship. For twenty years, they’d treated her like a pawn in their games.
Now they were both dead, yet their influence continued to haunt her life.
Noticing the shift in Suzy’s expression, Dylan wheeled himself closer and placed her hand in his.
“Once we uncover the person behind all this, it’ll all be over. After that, everything related to Charlotte will have nothing to do with you anymore. Don’t let irrelevant people affect your mood.”
Suzy gazed at Dylan deeply for a moment and then nodded. “Okay.”
Yet she couldn’t shake the unease that had been growing in her chest. It was a feeling she couldn’t quite put into words, as if something terrible was about to happen.
But how could things possibly get worse when everything was already so bad?
