If Evangeline were truly as terrible as Helena claimed, there was no way her brother would have fallen for her.
He wasn’t the type to let love cloud his judgment.
So, Helena was just trying to change the subject.
With that in mind, Suzy let out a cold laugh. "Great story. Very well told."
"You don’t believe me?" Helena chuckled bitterly.
"Of course you don’t. Why would you? She’s such a good actress. She fooled you and your brother. She had both of you wrapped around her little finger."
"Whether she deceived us or not has nothing to do with you. But you—" Suzy’s lips curled into a smirk.
"You’ve been going on and on about this nonsense just to keep me from going into your room.
"The more you try to stop me, the more I want to know what you’re hiding in there."
Before Helena could say another word, Suzy pushed past her and stormed inside.
But when the door swung open, there was no hidden person waiting inside—just a large, fluffy white Samoyed staring up at her.
Suzy froze. "The noise earlier came from this dog?"
"What else?" Helena shot her an annoyed glare.
"My little Snowy is timid around strangers and gets anxious when people barge in. So, would you please leave?"
"So that’s why you didn’t want me coming in?" Suzy raised an eyebrow.
"You were just trying to protect your dog?"
It seemed to be true.
The moment she stepped inside, the Samoyed darted behind the curtains, whimpering like a frightened child.
"What are you still standing there for? Get out! Can’t you see you scared my little Snowy?"
Helena sighed as she walked over and scooped the trembling dog into her arms, stroking its fur as if soothing a frightened toddler.
