Suzy dragged Evangeline out of the room and into the back garden.
As soon as they sat down in the pavilion, Evangeline asked urgently, "Did you find anything at Helena’s place?"
Seeing the anxious look on her face, Suzy’s gaze darkened slightly.
"No. Everything seemed normal with Helena. In fact, I think the Helena we saw before might have been an imposter."
"An imposter?" Evangeline frowned.
"Are you saying someone was pretending to be Helena?"
"Exactly. When I visited her yesterday, I found out she hasn’t left her house in days. She was poisoned. That means the Helena we met before wasn’t really her."
Evangeline’s frown deepened. "But what if she figured out that we were suspecting her and faked all of this? If she’s been exposed, she wouldn’t be able to carry out whatever she’s planning next."
Suzy nodded. "That’s possible too. Which is why I wanted to talk to you—we need to play along and put on a show of our own."
"A show?"
"Helena is trying to drive a wedge between us…" Suzy said, carefully watching Evangeline’s reaction.
But Evangeline’s expression remained unchanged, making Suzy even more certain that Helena was behind all of this.
"So, let’s give her what she wants. If she thinks we’re at odds, she might slip up and reveal something."
Evangeline pressed her lips together before nodding.
"Alright, let’s do it. However you want to play it, I’ll follow your lead."
Suzy smirked mischievously. "Then let’s make it a performance worth watching."
…
The next morning, during breakfast, everything seemed normal until Evangeline placed some food on Suzy’s plate, but the piece slipped and landed on Suzy’s clothes instead.
Suzy muttered under her breath, "I just changed."
"What’s that supposed to mean?" Evangeline suddenly snapped.
"I was just trying to be nice, and it slipped by accident! Do you really have to make such a big deal out of it?"
