After waking up, Suzy found it impossible to fall back asleep.
She gave up trying and got out of bed.
Here, she and Dylan weren’t sharing a room; she’d asked Desmond to stay with him instead.
After all, they hadn’t officially remarried yet, and keeping some distance felt like the right thing to do.
Truthfully, it wasn’t just about propriety.
Suzy worried that her unpredictable, late-night instincts might disrupt Dylan’s rest—like tonight.
If he were here, she would've woken him by now.
She decided to take a walk through the garden.
The seasons here were the complete opposite of what she was used to.
Back home, it was deep winter, but here, it was the height of summer.
The night air was thick with the chirping of crickets and the soft rustle of nocturnal birds—sounds that blended seamlessly with the warm, velvety night.
Suzy settled onto a garden swing, letting the soft, rhythmic creak ground her as she tried to clear her mind.
“You can doubt anyone, Suzy, but not her.”
She repeated the mantra over and over, willing herself to believe it.
But no matter how hard she tried, the thought wouldn’t leave her.
The suspicion kept circling back, deeply etched into her brain like an unshakable engraving.
The more she tried to dismiss it, the more it returned, an invasive, relentless whisper in her mind.
She sighed and rubbed her temples.
What was supposed to be a relaxing, grounding moment only left her more exhausted.
Suddenly, a sharp, panicked cry pierced the night.
"Intruders! We have intruders!"
Suzy shot up from the swing.
Intruders.
Her heart lurched as adrenaline flooded her system.
Without hesitation, she sprinted toward the source of the voice.
The scream had come from the direction of Evangeline's quarters.
Suzy’s pulse spiked as she sprinted toward the sound.
The moment she reached the corridor, she grabbed a passing maid by the arm. "What happened?"
"Someone broke in!" the maid said, breathless and wide-eyed.
"We tried to stop him, but he fought his way through and went straight to Her Majesty's chambers. The royal consort isn’t back yet, please, you have to help her!"
