Charlie still didn’t know that Ben was his father.
Throwing Charlie into such a situation, expecting him to adapt and stay with Ben before he even had time to process the truth, would undoubtedly leave him unwilling and confused.
Hearing Charlie’s name, Jamie felt a stabbing pain in her heart.
She began to avoid the subject. “Stop it. Let’s not talk about things that haven’t happened yet. Ben, I’m not going to be with you. And I can’t stand the thought of being separated from Charlie. If there’s no other way, then let’s just keep the truth from him forever.”
Ben refused to let her avoid the issue. “What you’re doing is cruel to Charlie. He’s just over three years old, Jamie. He’s been battling illness his whole life, and he’s never had a father. Now that he has one, how can you deny him that?”
Jamie fell silent.
Ben’s words cut to the harsh reality of their situation.
“I’ll find Winnie as soon as I can,” Ben said.
He knew Jamie’s biggest concern was her sister. If he could help mend their relationship, everything else would fall into place.
Ben used every connection he had to search for Winnie.
Meanwhile, Winnie was struggling deeply.
Her miscarriage had been incomplete, and she hadn’t taken the time to recover properly. Her physical state was deteriorating, and she often found herself plagued by nightmares.
She felt unsteady, both mentally and physically.
With Charlie now taken by Ben, she assumed he would be reunited with Jamie. Ben’s actions always revolved around Jamie, and Winnie was certain that even his return as Jack Green had been for her sister.
In Ben’s eyes, Jamie would always be his first and greatest love.
The thought left Winnie feeling cold and empty. The more she thought about it, the more meaningless everything seemed.
Back then, he had mentioned Ben, though she hadn’t understood the connection. Now she realized he had been orchestrating events to disrupt the safety of two nations, with Ben positioned to be a scapegoat.
Her heart clenched. She loved Ben—no, Jack Green.
Even though he was now Ben Lucas, to her, he was still Jack Green, and that’s how she thought of him.
Sitting in the car, Winnie quickly devised a plan.
She lunged at the man driving the car, catching him off guard. As he struggled to regain control, the steering wheel jerked wildly, and a massive truck came barreling toward them.
Winnie gripped the wheel tightly, refusing to let go.
She had only one thought. She couldn’t let Jack Green die.
A deafening crash followed by a searing wave of heat engulfed her senses. The world spun violently as she was hurled to the ground, pain crashing over her in unbearable waves.
