Chapter 73 

“That dude is a violent man. He almost killed me and they let him back into the streets? What if he kills someone else?” Vanessa said over the phone, massaging her temple as she continued pacing up and down. 

“Damn it, I showed them all the evidence. I wonder what went wrong!” 

Connie strolled into the living room in her nightdress, with a cup of tea. “It’s late honey, who are you fighting with over the phone?” Connie said, making her way towards the chair. 

“Fine! I will talk to you later when I come up with a better plan.” Vanessa commanded, ending the call. 

“What’s going on? You look really mad?” 

“Fucking Cole!!!!! Arghhhhhh!” She kicked the couch closest to her. 

“Take it easy, Vee. You know you are with a child and still in your first trimester.” 

“Oh Mom, please leave my pregnant belly out of this. I work so hard to make sure Cole pays for messing with me. Then suddenly I get news 

that he’s freed.” 

“Cole is freed?” Connie said in disbelief, placing her cup of tea, sitting on its saucer, on the table. 

“I don’t understand why he would be freed when I tendered all the evidence, I was assured he was going to be spending the rest of his life in jail unless I withdraw my case.” 

“The plan was perfect. Cole was meant to be here, seeking my forgiveness. Or his father on his behalf. But now he’s freed and people are not going to believe me anymore.” 

“Can you just stay in one place and stop pacing up and down?” 

Vanessa came to a halt in front of her mother. “Of course not, mamá. My life is ruined already, can’t you see that?” 

“I keep working so hard to make him mine but it is almost as though I’m not doing anything! He tries to downplay my efforts every single time!!!!” 

“I know you put so much effort into this baby, and I am sorry things ended like this. But I know we will figure this out. You are very smart. It 

won’t take you too long to come up with a better plan.” 

“No. This is me losing on all ends! Hailey must be laughing at me so hard. She came here to beat me up and she threatened me. I didn’t give in. But guess what? They still won over me. Remind me of how much of a loser I am.” 

Connie closed the gap with her daughter, who had a band–aid on her forehead, covering the injury from the previous day. 

“You are not a loser, baby. I know your plan was strong enough but you need to remember that Cole is a reputable man. He has that gold digger lawyer who would always come to his aid, I heard she is one of the best lawyers in the city.” 

“I hate her so damn much,” Vanessa said with gritted teeth. 

“Remember Cole is rich so apart from his lawyer, he probably has his ways too. I won’t be surprised if Hailey helped him out too. You know she’s rich now and sort of has a good influence.” 

“This is so unfair! What am I going to do now? I put in so much effort but Hailey keeps winning over me effortlessly.” 

“This is so sad, Mom. What if Hailey and Cole are together right now? Laughing at my stupidity. Why was I born unlucky mama?” She said

“Oh, no, don’t say that, my love. Something would be done.” 

“When? I’m tired of waiting, Lam really losing hope. The plan was to have my dream wedding before I start showing but my belly has slowly. started to pop out “Vanessa looked down, staring at her belly through her night dress. No much difference. Just some bloating down there. 

“How am I going to fit into my dream wedding dress? The world is going to mock me if I give birth to this child out of wedlock. I am going to lose my respect!” 

“Calm down, sweetheart. We still have enough time to come up with something.” 

“You all never know what it means to give up, do you?” The familiar voice came through. 

Connie and Vanessa’s eyes flashed towards the entrance and they saw Eric stroll in with an angry face. 

“And what do you think we are talking about that gives you the right to command us?” 

“Do you both discuss anything apart from Cole and Hailey?” Eric approached the duo, standing a few steps away from them. 

He turned to look at Vanessa. “Aren’t you tired of plotting against someone who doesn’t feel anything for you? Don’t you think it is time to do away with all of your shitty behavior and move on?” 

Vanessa shook her head. “I’m not behaving shitty! I am fighting for my future family.” 

“Oh really? By accusing the man you claim to love of something really grievous. Do you think he would want anything to do with you now 

that you have humiliated him?” 

“Is this the kind of manipulative behavior you are going to teach your baby? Oh since you claim that Cole is the father, I am sure you are going to be happy when your child comes home from school one day, crying that he was bullied by a friend because his mother once sent his father 

to jail in the past.” 

Connie rolled her eyes. “Stop with these future talks, Eric. That will be a long time and no one will even remember what happened. Besides, 

Couples fight, don’t they?” 

“I am not surprised about your response. You keep patting Vanessa on her back instead of scolding her.” 

Eric turned his attention back to Vanessa. “And in case you don’t know, you are ruining your life.” 

“She’s not. You are the one being so insensitive. She is doing all she can so she can be with Cole. Cole is her husband and not that slut.” 

“Cole is old enough to be with whoever he wants to be with. And don’t forget he is a married man. Something that wouldn’t have happened if your daughter married him in the first place instead of bringing Hailey into the picture.” 

“Real people accept their mistakes, Vanessa! You threw away the life you could have had with Cole. You threw it all away with your hands because you thought he was poor. Accept the truth and fucking Heal!” 

Vanessa didn’t know what to say. She continued staring in sadness. 

“Don’t you dare raise your voice at her. She’s been through a lot.” 

“You should be thankful Cole was released without them turning you in for fraud or murder.” 

“Oh, please, Hailey got no proof. All she was saying were all lies.” Connie countered.

Eric scoffed in disbelief. “You both should be grateful that Hailey has a good heart like her mother. Despite all the evil you both keep doing, she has been keeping her distance and not exposing you all.” 

“Just keep in mind that the quiet ones do strike back and the day they gonna do that, it’s going to be bloody. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.” 

“Well since you like her so much and defend her so much, then tell her to leave Cole for me!” Vanessa yelled. 

“Or better still, talk to Moore since he is your best friend. Tell him to talk some sense into his son and let his son come back to me. It is only then that everyone is going to have peace!” 

“You should be ashamed of yourself Vanessa. If you were to be Moore, would you want your Son who happens to be your only child to end up with someone as psycho as Vanessa Summers? 

“Do you think it’s only Cole’s reputation you ruined? Don’t you know you have dragged his father’s reputation down the drain too? And now you are expecting some form of pity from him?” 

“The bond Eric and I have is now destroyed because of you. The bond we kept years before you were born. I saw him earlier today and could not even look into his eyes or make proper conversations with him because of how ashamed I was of your actions.” 

“You make a selfish decision that only benefits you without caring who you are hurting in the process. And guess what, the more evil you do,the more unhappy you become.” 

Eric shook his head in regret. “I can’t believe you are my child because you definitely do not take after me.”
