Dear Ex-wife Marry Me novel (Maja) novel Chapter 1529

Fitch felt a knot in his stomach as he saw Zoey's tears. That woman just wouldn't leave him alone.

And Carol's baseless accusations were the last straw. He was out of patience.

"Didn't the Millers run into some trouble recently? Ms. Miller, you sure seem to have the time to meddle in other people's business."

Carol stiffened, her gaze on Fitch becoming even more intense.

"I'm talking about Zoey's situation here, Mr. Haskins. Don't tell me you're one of those guys who hits and runs without owning up to it?"

Her voice was calm, her stare penetrating, "I haven't known Zoey for long, but she's always been too timid to stir up trouble." The implication was clear: you lured her in, now you're discarding her. What kind of man does that make you?

Fitch couldn't help but laugh—a cold, mocking sound.

"I can't be expected to take responsibility for every woman I've been with."

He smoothly pulled out a check and extended it towards Zoey.

"Three hundred thousand."

The sum was an insult, especially since that was the very amount she had asked for when she had come to him of her own volition.

Zoey's tears stopped in their tracks, and she looked up at him in disbelief.

But there was no emotion in his eyes, just impatience and an eagerness to shake her off.

Her fingers trembled, probably not expecting this public display of payment.

Carol was stunned, but quickly snatched the check, aiming to throw it in Fitch's face.

Tyler swiftly pulled her aside, his voice light but firm as he addressed the onlookers.

"Let's disperse, folks, move along."

Then he lowered his voice.

"You might want to keep your temper in check. Fitch is right, the Millers could use some help right now."

Carol froze, ready to retort, but felt the check being taken from her hand.

It was Zoey.

Zoey stood tall, acting as if the numbers on the check meant nothing to her, her voice hoarse.

"Thank you. I'll take this and I won't bother you again."

With that, her tears flowed even more fiercely.
