But clearly, the thoughtful gifts she had carefully picked out were nothing more than props for Felix's grand gestures to others. He despised her so much that he probably felt disgusted even receiving her gifts.
Carol wandered around the living room, spotting that every single one of her presents was there. She couldn't help but laugh at it, and her laughter peeled out genuinely.
Nathan stood before her, a bundle of nerves, now regretting not having bought a house in Greenfield. Then, at least, he wouldn't have had to watch Carol sit in his cramped living room. She was born with a silver spoon, rightfully nurtured by privilege and wealth, not meant to be in his rundown backyard.
Nathan was yearning for a woman's touch. He wasn't a head-turner like Felix; his features were too ordinary, easily lost in a crowd.
When he got that car, some woman at the office started looking his way. He had his fun a few times, but soon she left him for not being able to afford other luxuries.
Later, Ian transferred him to Crystalbrook Valley, and upon his return, he got a promotion and a hefty raise.
Then, his good buddy Felix took over the Miller Group and roped him in as a manager. His salary skyrocketed; now he was pulling in tens of thousands a month.
He wasn't without ability; he used to comfort himself with that thought. He just hadn't met the right boss.
Nathan was grateful to Felix, but since Felix had gained so much and didn't care for Carol, why not let her choose for herself?
Nathan knew where he stood with Carol. Without the Miller family's crisis, a beauty and heiress like her wouldn't have given him the time of day. The price tag on her casual handbag was more than he could earn in a lifetime.
But things were different now. He could talk to Carol, share a roof with her. Nathan might not have been the most capable at work, but he excelled in devotion. If Carol showed the slightest interest, he was ready to be her loyal suitor.
Now, at the sight of Carol lounging on the couch, his heart raced.
"Today's Christmas' Day. How about you stay here, Ms. Miller? I’ll cook us some dinner; I can start right now."
"You any good in the kitchen?"

The readers' comments on the novel: Dear Ex-wife Marry Me novel (Maja)
Author, would you story about Ryan settling down and another story on Eric regaining his body and memories back from Patrick, and Eric also settling down as I find it so disheartening for him to have gone through what he went through at the research institute, and I'll like for him to get his "golden boy" life back though, not at the detriment of Ian....
When will the author update to finish Beck's story? What about Dylan and Tyler's love lives? Also, I'll like the author to write on Wilma and Elvis ending up together as she was quite persistent in pursuing him. And Shawn's story, Cornelia Sullivan and Omar Casson. Also, a little write-up on Jeff (Ian's assistant) love life, too. Thanks, author for updating....
