The next morning, Zoey awoke to an unfamiliar ceiling and still felt a bit disoriented. Fitch had already bought breakfast and placed it on the bedside table. She got up sluggishly to freshen up, always feeling like he was scheming something, perhaps concocting a new method to torment her. But until the end of breakfast, he remained silent, just sitting there, staring at her as if she would vanish the next second.

She couldn't take it anymore. "Mr. Haskins, what in the world do you want?"

Fitch lowered his eyelashes, finally showing a sign of weakness. "Don't want to go back to Greenfield, huh? Want to stay in Zion City forever?"

"Yeah."

"Then I'll stay in Greenfield too, just across from your place. Nolan really likes you. How about you come over for dinner every day to keep him company? Can you do that?"

Zoey was taken aback because Fitch's tone was unexpectedly gentle. It was rare for him to ask for permission; he usually just made decisions on his own. Now, as he looked into her eyes, he seemed genuinely earnest in his question. Suddenly, she felt a bit uncomfortable. To refuse would be to disregard Nolan, who was indeed adorable. To accept, who knew what Fitch was plotting.
