After a morning of shopping, Shirley was completely worn out upon returning to their apartment.

Abner started working on his homework at the desk, and Shirley couldn't help but feel a sense of pride seeing him so focused.

She pointed to a small empty space next to them, about six square feet.

"How about I set up a desk here for you? It would be convenient for your studies. Or we could put it in your bedroom. Where would you prefer?"

"In the bedroom, I think. I don't want to disturb you."

"Then the bedroom it is. That way, you'll have your own space."

Abner's bedroom was fairly spacious, about 215 square feet, so fitting in a desk wouldn't be a problem.

Shirley hung up the clothes they had bought in the closet and placed the new shoes in the shoe rack outside.

"Abner, I'm going to dispose of these old clothes and shoes that don't fit you anymore. You can wear the new ones from now on."

Abner quickly stood up, "I'll do it."

"Don't worry, you don't know where the trash chute is. It's in the basement."

Shirley was just too kind, so much so that Abner felt bad speaking loudly.

However, in the evening, Mr. Davis called again, this time with a more severe tone, likely because Mark had complained to him again.

Shirley, already exhausted, rubbed her temples.

"Shirley, Mark told me you've taken in a kid. What were you thinking? Do you have any idea how much it costs to raise a child? And the boy's in high school, practically a young man. You're letting him live with you? You're getting more and more disobedient!"

Shirley was already stressed, and dealing with her breakup with Mark only added to her frustration.

"Dad, he broke up with me."

"Then buy him a gift, make up. You were talking marriage, and you split over an outsider? And this kid you've brought home, send him back. You always act on impulse without considering the consequences!"
