She was silent, and so was Neil, his head bowed low. 

“I hold a total of 35% of the shares. I’ll give Tricia 20%, and you 15%. 

Maja felt a bitter sting, not knowing what to say. 

She was always left behind. 

Dumped by the Leo Elston family, dumped by lan, and now, dumped by Neil. 

She never felt needed. 

She was once told she mattered, only to be ditched without a second thought. 

“Maja, Lillian gave up her painting career to take care of you, and that’s why her health deteriorated.” 

The weight of such a favour left Maja feeling at a loss. 

“If you’re not my daughter, then you’re definitely not Lillian’s either. Maybe we got the wrong baby at the hospital. I don’t know whether Lillian’s actual child is dead or alive or where she is, but I hope you can find her.” 

Neil closed his eyes, weary. 

“I don’t have much time left. I overheard the doctors talking when I was discharged. I only have half a year left.” 

Every word from Neil added to Maja’s mental burden. 

If she didn’t agree to take over the Pennyfeather family’s company, or if she didn’t search for the child Lillian gave birth to, she would feel guilty for not repaying the Pennyfeather family’s kindness and for not living up to Lillian’s sacrifices. 

In Crystalbrook Valley, especially over two decades ago, Lillian was the only one who didn’t care whether her child was a boy or a girl. 

But every other family cared a great deal about this. The old folks said that back then, there were many abandoned baby girls on the streets, left in baskets, with nobody daring to pick them up. 

Many baby girls starved or froze to death. 

If Maja had been switched at birth, then the girl who was switched out, Lillian’s actual daughter, probably didn’t survive. 

The chances of a baby girl surviving were very slim at that time. 

Neil had feelings for Lillian. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have taken her away from Crystalbrook Valley to settle in Greenfield. 

But despite their hard work, they raised a child that wasn’t their own. 

Maja’s hand trembled slightly. 

She hadn’t done anything, yet she felt like a criminal. 

She took a deep breath and slowly stood up. 

“I agree to take over the Pennyfeather Group, and I agree to help you find your biological daughter. But if Tricia hurts me again, I won’t let it slide. Only if she behaves will I.” 

Neil, knowing he only had half a year left to live, didn’t bother with anything else. 

To find out on his deathbed that the child he beloved wife raised wasn’t his. 

He couldn’t help but resent Maja, and his guilt towards her vanished instantly. 

All he hoped, for now, was that Maja could help the Pennyfeather Group. 

No wonder Maja had such high business acumen, she shone from an early age. Even studying in the impoverished Crystalbrook Valley, she managed to get into the top–ranked Solstice College. 

She had such outstanding genes it was hard to believe she was his daughter. 

Neil’s hand clenched into a fist under the blanket. 

So where was his and Lillian’s daughter? 

Maja went downstairs, only to see a table full of food that had completely gone cold, which felt like a cruel joke. 

Laughing, she started to taste bitterness in her mouth.
