Daly, in the office, usually spoke with such a thick accent that it’s hard to understand him sometimes. 

But Daly was way better than Leo. Leo talked so fast and his accent was so thick that if Maja hadn’t dealt with him before, she’d really have no idea what he was saying. 

“Why aren’t you saying anything? How could you do this? How are you any different from a gold digger or the hookers on a small commodity street?” 

Daly was really pissed, so angry that his fingers were shaking. 

Maja knew what he meant by “small commodity street. There used to be prostitutes in Crystalbrook Valley. 

Women passing by would always look down on those women. They were afraid that these prostitutes would ruin their families. 

Once, when she was in school, she and her aunt passed by that place, and there were always women gossiping about the prostitutes. 

“If you don’t study hard, you’ll end up like them.” 

But Maja remembered that when she was very young! Lillian took her past that place once. 

She said, “Maja, if you study hard and grow up to be capable, you can help them find good jobs. That’s the real meaning of studying hard.” 

Maja didn’t understand at the time. It wasn’t until she grew up and thought back on those prostitutes on “small commodity street” that she felt the impact of Lillian’s words. 

Now, facing Daly’s accusations, she was speechless. 

Seeing that she had nothing to say, Daly continued.

Maja’s face turned cold. “Uncle, do you know how many things I’ve handled for Leo? If it weren’t for me mediating, Olivia would still be in jail for that eight million. You can say I disappointed my mom, but I’ve never done anything to hurt your family.” 

“That’s not the same! Being with lan is just degrading yourself! He will never marry you; men are just playing around!” 

As soon as he finished speaking, he saw lan coming around the corner and froze. 

lan also happened to hear this last sentence, and his brows furrowed.

Daly quickly lowered his head and tried to leave, but lan walked over and put his arm around Maja’s waist. 

“And how do you know I won’t marry her?” 

His tone was indifferent. “How is her being with me degrading herself?” 

Daly’s face turned pale. 

“Mr. Raymond, I’m sorry.” 

lan’s gaze was intimidating, and his tone was as cold as ice. 

“You’d better mind your own business.” 

Daly was so scared that he hurried off, nearly tripping over his own feet. 

lan released his tight hold on Maja as soon as Daly left, his gaze shifting to the distance. 

“What I said earlier was just a joke.” 

Maja was taken aback, wondering which line he was referring to. 

“The part about me marrying you was just a joke. I just wanted to help you save face.” 

Maja nodded, her expression calm. 

“I understand, Mr. Raymond. Thank you.” 

lan started to walk toward his room. 

Maja had no choice but to follow him. 

As soon as they entered, he pushed Maja against the window sill.
