She coughed harshly, her eyes brimming with fragility. 

“Actually, I got it. It must be either Carlene or Laura. I only pissed off the two of them last night.” 

Samuel didn’t offer her any water, probably because she’d get terrified just by seeing it. 

He frowned, watching as Maja picked up her phone from the side and found a recording sent by Carlene. It was last night’s conversation with lan. 

She didn’t lower the volume, so Samuel could hear it clearly, making his head spin in anger. 

“Dang! That lan is such a scumbag! Penny, you’ve got to dump him ASAP; stop putting up with his crap!” 

Maja didn’t respond; she just felt uncomfortable in her throat. 

Samuel snatched her phone. “Stop listening; let those two immoral jerks get what they deserve!” 

Maja dropped her gaze, hands resting outside the blanket, feeling a bit puzzled. 

“I’ve been wondering, why does he hate me so much?” 

Even though she took his wife’s place, she never met him and even suggested a three–month divorce timeline. There were only two months left. Why did he still want to hurt her? 

If she had really died last night, he probably wouldn’t feel any remorse and maybe even use the opportunity to divorce. 

“Penny, that’s how men are. Some of them don’t know what they’ve got until it’s gone. They ruin the best things and then pretend to lament, saying, ‘If only I could go back.‘ I know men too well.” 

Maja stopped talking, and Samuel continued to stir the pot. 

Seeing her expression grow colder, he left satisfied. 

The doctor told Maja she had to stay a few more days in the hospital.

Holden called to ask how she was doing.

“Grandpa Holden, don’t force me to hang out with lan anymore.”

After hanging up, Maja felt incredibly tired. 

She rested at home for half a month, finally recovering from the trauma of nearly drowning. 

Then she heard that the Shepard family had sold a piece of land for 80 million. The Shepard family was running low on funds and was seeking financing. 

Because of lan’s behavior on the cruise, Carlene’s status as an ex–girlfriend was no longer useful unless she could prove that lan still cared about her. 

Just as Maja was about to open the document in front of her, her phone pinged. It was a message from lan. 

Every two days, he would send her a message, asking what she was doing. 

Maja never replied, and by now there were ten unanswered messages. 

She took a screenshot of lan’s message screen and posted it on her Instagram. 

The caption read, “Married. Please stop bothering me.” 

She didn’t blur out lan’s name. Anyone who was his friend could clearly see that it was him.
