Dear Ex-Wife Please Be Mine Again (Christina and Alex) novel Chapter 187

Chapter 187 Madam Margret Alistair's POV

The moment I ended the call with Daniel Brooks, the bile in my throat burned like acid. How dare he? How dare he? Of all the insolent, pathetic creatures l'd had the misfortune to deal with, Daniel had to be the most infuriating. A man who couldn't even keep his head above water now had the audacity to demand my help.

I sat motionless for a moment, my manicured nails digging into the polished armrest of the velvet chair. Around me, the private lounge hummed with the laughter and idle chatter of my closest friends. The air smelled of wealth...expensive perfume, aged cognac, and exclusivity.

"Margret?" Lady Eleanor's voice broke through my spiraling thoughts. She was seated directly across from me, a striking figure in her pearl-gray suit, her sharp eyes narrowing in curiosity.

"Is everything alright? You've been staring daggers at that phone for the past minute."

I forced a smile, one that didn't reach my eyes. "Oh, it's nothing.

Just an unexpected nuisance."

Eleanor exchanged glances with Lady Mercury, who sat to my left, swirling her champagne as though she had all the time in the world. "Unexpected nuisances rarely bother you, Margret," Mercury said, her voice laced with amusement. "What's happened?"

I leaned back in my chair, schooling my expression into one of practiced indifference. "Daniel Brooks happened. The arrogant fool had the nerve to call m e from a cell."

The table fell silent. Even the ever-chatty Lady Violet paused mid- sentence, her glass hovering just below her lips.

"Daniel Brooks?" Eleanor repeated, her voice dripping with disdain.

"Isn't he the one who's being charged for that horrid business with Christiana and her children?"

"The very same," | confirmed, my tone icy. "Apparently, he thinks I owe him a favor. He wants me to use my influence to get him out before his trial."

Mercury scoffed, her red lips curving into a cruel smirk. "The audacity of some men never ceases to amaze me. What did you say?"

"What I always say to men like him," I replied, lifting my champagne flute. "What they want to hear. For now."

Violet laughed, a sharp, cutting sound. "And here I thought the man had finally fallen into the pit he dug for himself. Let me guess, he's panicking now that his precious reputation is in shambles?"

I took a sip of my drink, the bubbles tingling on my tongue.

"Panicking is an understatement. He's desperate. And desperation makes men reckless."

Eleanor leaned forward, her chin resting on her manicured hand.

"And what's your plan, Margret? You wouldn't entertain his nonsense unless you saw an opportunity."

"Of course"" I said, setting my glass down with a soft clink. "I'll do what h e asks...for now. Let him think h e h a s a lifeline. But the moment he steps out of that cell, he'll find himself in a much deeper grave than the one he's already in."

Mercury grinned, her eyes glittering with malice. "I do love it when you play with your prey, Margret. Just make sure its spectacular when you end him."
