I couldn’t bring myself to ask the doctor about the results. Instead, I grabbed a tissue and wiped the ultrasound gel from my stomach, quickly adjusting my shirt before heading out of the room. 

Damian appeared in the hallway, his face full of regret Ma’am, Ms. Sander … she’s gone.” 

I stopped, barely whispering, “You mean she … ran away?” 

Damian stiffened under my gaze, 

He wasn’t a man who lied easily, though his honesty didn’t make him any better at covering it up. 

I walked toward him slowly, keeping my eyes locked on his. “Look down,” I said, my voice hard. 

Though I stood in flat shoes, he seemed like a giant towering over me. 

Damian lowered his head, and I slapped him across the face. “Don’t think you can fool me, Damian” 

He mumbled a soft apology, eyes still cast down. “Sorry, ma’am.” 

I could never bring myself to strike Carter, but Damian He was different. He had lied, and that was Something I couldn’t ignore. 

If Carter hadn’t been behind this, Whitney couldn’t have escaped that easily. 

They had all schemed behind my back. 

“Chloe,” Carter’s voice drifted in from behind me. 

I didn’t even acknowledge him. Instead, I turned and went back into the ultrasound room, slamming the door shut, leaving Carter outside. 

It was likely too late to chase Whitney. I suspected Carter had already arranged everything for her escape. 

The doctor pushed her glasses up nervously and handed me the report. “Mrs. Bolton, here’s your checkup result.” 

“Thank you.” 

I took the paper, and my heart stopped when I saw the words, “Intrauterine early pregnancy, twins.” 

Twins. I was pregnant with twins. 

“Doctor, are you telling me I’m having twins?” My voice trembled, and before I realized what I was doing, I grabbed his hand, tears welling up uncontrollably. 

“Yes, Mrs. Bolton. It’s true. Not only are you having twins, but both babies are healthy. Their heartbeats and development look normal. If you and Mr. Bolton wish, you can return in a few weeks to find out the babies‘ genders.” 

The gender didn’t matter. I had two healthy babies. That was enough for me. 

More than enough for me.

Tears filled my eyes, and I couldn’t stop them from falling.

The doctor quickly led me to a chair. “Mrs. Bolton, you need to stay calm. Your emotions can affect your pregnancy.” 

She handed me a tissue, urging me to wipe away my tears. 

At that moment, Carter entered the room. Seeing me upset and the doctor offering comfort, he immediately sensed something was wrong, 

He quickly stepped toward me and wrapped his arm around my shoulders. “Don’t cry. Whatever happens, we’ll handle it together.” 

I looked up at him through blurred vision. “Garl, the baby 

The worry in his eyes deepened. “What happened? Is the baby okay?” 

“It’s… it’s twins,” I stammered, my words barely coming out. 

Carter’s gaze shifted to the report in my hands. He gripped it tighter, his emotions clearly visible. 

His usually composed face showed his shock. “We’re having two?” 

I nodded eagerly, tears streaming down my face. Without thinking, I reached out to him. “Yes, we’re having twins.” 

“Chloe, you’re incredible,” he whispered. 

“No, no, it’s you. You’re the amazing one,” I replied, the words coming from my heart. 

As we exchanged words, I realized the doctor was still standing nearby, her eyes flicking between us. She probably hadn’t expected this moment to unfold like it had. And I remembered how Carter let Whitney do what she wanted. 

I pushed Carter away gently, realizing the doctor was still there. 

The doctor looked like she had intruded.on something private. When our eyes met, she quickly turned 

her head. 

“Ahem, Mr. and Mrs. Bolton, please continue. I didn’t see anything,” she said awkwardly. 

Carter cleared his throat, his expression returning to calm. “How’s the baby?” 

“Mr. Bolton, there’s no need to worry. The babies are healthy,” she reassured him. 

“And my wife?” 

“I’ve checked all of Mrs. Bolton’s health indicators. She’s in great shape.” 

“Thank you,” Carter replied, his voice steady. 

I tried to pull away from him again, but his grip on my hand was firm, stopping me from giving in to my frustration. 

Once we were in the car Carter gently placed my hand on his face as the door clicked shut. “Chloe if

I punched his chest lightly. “Carter, you jerk! You knew Whitney was my only family, and you let her take that risk! What if something happens to her? What if something happens to the babies? What will I do? They won’t have an aunt…” 

Carter pulled me into his arms, his voice soft, “I’m sorry, Chloe. I couldn’t stop her. Would you have stayed calm if you knew I was in danger?” 

I shook my head, exasperated. “No one else would do what you’re doing. You’re impossible, being a brother–in–law like this.” 

“It’s better to let go than to hold on. If you keep her close, she’ll always find a way to escape. Instead of forcing her to stay, why not offer her protection in a way that still gives her freedom? She’s different from you. She knows how the organization works, and she’s capable of taking care of herself. The key thing is, Luther has feelings for her.” 

Carter reached up and tucked a loose strand of my hair behind my ear. “If I’m not mistaken, Taylor has already made a deal with the police. He’s been working undercover, pretending to be an initiate to gather evidence. Once he has it, he’ll alert them, and they’ll strike, catching everyone in one sweep.” 

“That sounds like a flawless plan, doesn’t it?” I muttered, doubt clear in my voice. 

“No plan is without its risks. Have you thought about that? Even though Taylor knows the organization inside and out, he’s still just an initiate. Whitney, on the other hand, has direct access to the higher–ups. She can work with them more easily. And, honestly, a pretty face can do more than any weapon.” 

I fixed my eyes on Carter. “You’re helping Whitney. Don’t tell me there’s no personal reason behind it.”
