Carter was searching for me. 

Only hearing his name sent a sharp ache through my chest.

My heart pounded as I recalled how coldly he treated his parents. It made me uneasy. 

He stood at the doorway, the dim wall lamp from the staircase casting a faint glow around his silhouette. 

Slowly, he stepped forward. His voice was calm but firm. “Did you hear everything?” 

I held my stomach, trying to act clueless as I took a step back. “Hear what?” 

“Coco, I’m your psychiatrist. Don’t lie to me.” 

Sergio moved toward me, backing me up until I was pressed against the edge of the bed, with nowhere left to go. 

His fingers brushed against my cheek, feeling the cold sweat on my skin and the tremble in my body. 

“Are you scared of me, Coco?” 

How could I not be? If I weren’t pregnant, I would fight him with everything I had. 

But I had two babies inside me. The fear was overwhelming. 

I shuddered even more, my voice barely above a whisper. “I–I’m not scared.” 

Sergio let out a soft laugh. “You’re shaking like a leaf, and you say you’re not scared?” 

His chuckle didn’t ease my nerves. If anything, it made my fear worse.
