“That looks nice,” he hissed, “but I think it’s just carpet burn and bruising.”
He carried on his inspection of her leg. When he got to her ankle it was by far the worst of her issues.
“This is badly sprained. I’ll get my bag and wrap it up for you. Is…” Benjamin stopped talking and seemed to swallow back the words. “…your husband due back soon?” He had to force the words out
“No, he’s not,‘ she replied calmly. Benjamin returned a nod with the same intensity.
“Just give me a few minutes.”
Benjamin came back with his bag and wrapped up her ankle and then placed an ice pack over it. “I’m going to listen to your heart rate, take your blood pressure then we’ll look over Jack and Micheal?”
Pandora nodded, loving how he was so much like her in the way he called the babies first by the pet names she gave them and now by the names they would have after birth.
“Your blood pressure is a little, up, he sighed and then moved back to her bump. “Boys you need to stop giving your momma scares,” he told them sternly. They just kicked at his hand, making him smile.
“I know you got a fright too, and that you’re sorry, but try and watch out for her, okay?” And again they kicked at him.
“Keep this up Doc and when they are here, and not sleeping for me, I’m going to be calling you.”
Benjamin looked at her with a smile. “Make sure you do, I love seeing the babies I deliver, and I’ll be over here in a heartbeat.”
Benjamin and she only stopped looking at each other when the babies moved around as if they were reminding them they were there too.
“I think you are fine, and they are fine. But you need to stay off of your feet, and since your husband can’t be here then I’m going to stay over.” Pandora was about to argue but he covered her mouth, leaning over so that their faces were as close to each other as could be separated by his hand. “Or I will take your ass to the hospital.”
Her eyes flickered to his, trying hard to see them through his tinted glasses. She was beginning to hate them with a burning passion. “Fine, but only if you take the bed in the spare room so you are comfortable.”
Benjamin grinned and nodded in agreement. Pandora went to move out of her bed to take him, but he pushed her back.
“Off your feet,” he warned with a look that said ‘don’t push me.
“Fine, the kitchen is in the same place as last time, help yourself, and the spare room, just down on the opposite end of the hall from here,” she said pointing.
Benjamin chuckled before winking.
“There are extra blankets and stuff in the hall closet, help yourself if you need extra.”
“I am sure I would have found it without
your help. Benjamin walked out. With that, Pandora yawned, lying back, and closed her eyes.
Stretching, Pandora got out of bed. But
If it’s the only way I can keep you off your feet, then so be it.”
