Chapter 11 

I truthfully informed Brennan of my plan, and he let out a cold laugh. 

“Marlene, did you think that this would be enough to repay me for my kindness towards you? But it’s far from enough, I want you to be by my side forever!” 

“I disagreed with your leaving without my permission, you could only stay by my side. Today, you had to go with me!” 

He approached again, wanting to hug me, but I pushed him away. 

“I have already said it before, when I was young and foolish, I thought I had fallen in love with you. And you used to dislike me bothering you all the time, right? Now I won’t bother you anymore, so please don’t come and bother me either, okay, Uncle?” 

Brennan smiled and then burst into tears, sobbing uncontrollably. “You say you don’t love me anymore? What am I supposed to do? I have already fallen in love with you, I simply cannot be without you! Just the thought of you leaving my side makes me feel unbearable pain!” 

“Marlene, I know I hurt your heart before, that’s why you don’t want to love me anymore. I won’t force you to fall in love with me again right away, just come back with me. After we go back, we can slowly cultivate our feelings, okay?”

I refused him again and said sincerely, “Uncle, you just couldn’t accept me leaving you, couldn’t accept me breaking free from your control. This is not love, true love is not like this.” 

“You should leave here soon and never come to find me again. In the future, I will come back to see you. You have raised me for so many years, you have long been my family.” 

But Brennan refused to leave, and just as he was dragging me away like a madman, our senior brother, who heard the commotion, quickly came over to help. 

Brennan rushed all the way, but he was no match for the young senior brother. He was immediately knocked down to the ground. 

He sat down on the ground, looking at me coldly and said, “Marlene, you’ve grown! Just a few days after leaving me, you already have another man! Did you come to this mountain because of him? Is it because of him that you don’t want to go back with me?” 

“Do you believe that I could make him lose his education and future career, leaving him with no place to stand in this city?” 

My senior brother heard him insulting me and was so angry that he was about to go forward and hit him, but I stopped him.

“Brennan, could you be any more shameless! Just because I didn’t go back with you, you threatened the people around me?” 

He seemed to have caught my weakness, and a smile crept up on his lips. 

“Yes, as long as you obediently come back with me, I promise not to harm him! Otherwise, I will make you regret your choice today!” 

“You!” 

I was so angry that tears streamed down my face. My senior brother quickly comforted me, saying, “Marlene, don’t cry. It’s not worth crying for someone like him! I am your senior brother, and it’s my duty to protect you! Besides, I wasn’t scared at all!” 

Brennan’s face darkened even more when he saw this, and a few words squeezed out from between his teeth, “Marlene, are you sure you won’t come back with me?” 

This time, I looked at him firmly and said, “I will not go back with you, and I am not afraid of your threats. If you don’t leave, I will call the police!” 

Brennan’s disdainful expression seemed to be telling me that calling the police would be useless. With his family background and status, he simply wouldn’t be afraid. 

I reported to the police in front of him and then said to him, “Brennan, you thought the police couldn’t do anything to you, right?” 

“But our research project was confidential. You followed my senior brother all the way to our base. Do you know what this means?” 

“Now, do you still think the police couldn’t do anything to you?” 

I turned around and reported the matter to my mentor. The mentor instructed a few senior colleagues to restrain Brennan and wait for the arrival of the police. 

He only realized the seriousness of the problem then and suggested that I talk to him. 

But I didn’t want to say a word to him anymore, not until the police car arrived and I handed him over to the police. I didn’t speak to him again. 

In the following days, I remained busy. 

It had been half a year since I last saw Brennan, and the investigation project progressed much faster than expected, finishing a whole three months ahead of schedule. 

I had just arrived on campus when I received the wedding invitation from Brennan.

I thought about it, but I didn’t attend his wedding. I just gave him a call to congratulate him, saying,
