Chapter 60: Memories I’ve Buried
JULIA
I shut the door behind me, walking away from the room that made it hard to breathe. As soon as I was out of the vicinity, my legs wobbled, and I felt tears prickling my eyes again.
I only acted tough inside, but in reality, I didn’t know what to do. I knew his words held some truth, and that was what I hated the most.
I walked until I reached the lobby. I looked around and quickly saw the two of them.
Evan was sitting in one of the chairs, holding Andy in his arms. The boy was fast asleep, his small face resting peacefully against Evan’s chest. Evan looked down at him with such tenderness that, for a moment, I felt my breath hitch.
It should have been a beautiful picture.
It was a beautiful picture.
But my chest tightened painfully when, suddenly, an image of Heather emerged right beside Evan. I felt like I was stabbed in the chest.
She was dabbing Andy’s forehead with a damp cloth. She moved so gently, and she looked utterly maternal. They looked like the perfect family.
I knew it was my imagination, but it felt so real.
I froze, my legs refusing to move.
I couldn’t help but wonder if this was Evan’s plan all along.
Was this his perfect little family, ready to replace me the moment he found out about Andy? The thought burned like acid in my throat, but I forced myself to take a deep breath and push it down.
I walked over to them. Evan glanced up when he heard me approach, his expression softening when he saw me.
“Julia,” he said quietly, not wanting to disturb Andy.
I didn’t reply. Inste
reply. Instead, 1 gently took Andy from his arms. He stirred slightly but didn’t wake as I cradled him close to my chest.
Evan frowned. “I can carry him,” he offered, his voice full of concern.
“No,” I sai
I said, shaking my head firmly. “I can do it.”
He hesitated, but eventually, he nodded and sat back in his chair. I felt awkward, so I avoided his gaze entirely, focusing on adjusting Andy in my arms.
Then, I couldn’t help but ask the question that had been gnawing at my insides.
“Did you tell your dad to do this?” I suddenly asked.
Evan blinked, taken aback. “What?”
“Did you tell him?” I repeated, my grip tightening around Andy. “Is this to prove that he’s really your son? Ellie mentioned that your dad wanted an heir. So, is this why he thinks he has a claim on Andy?”
Evan’s expression darkened, and he shook his head adamantly. “No,” he said. “I would never do that.”

I stared at him, searching his face for any sign of deceit. But Evan wasn’t lying. He looked genuinely hurt by the accusation.
I sighed, shaking my head. “Maybe this was a bad idea,” I muttered to myself..
Evan leaned forward, his brows furrowing. “What do you mean?”
“All of this,” I said, gesturing vaguely. “I thought…I thought it would be better if you knew. Andy never mentioned you until his birthday. He wanted to meet you so much, and I didn’t know what to tell him.”
I let out a deep breath.
“I thought you deserved to know the truth, and I thought it would make things easier. But now…” I shook my head, the words catching in my throat. “Now everything just feels messier. More complicated. We were fine, Evan Andy and I were fine. Maybe there was peace when it was just the two of us.”
“Julia,” Evan said, his voice soft but insistent. “I know things aren’t perfect right now. I know we aren’t in a good place. But you have to trust me.”
I looked at him, feeling the sting of unshed tears behind my eyes. “How can I?” I whispered.
“How can I trust you when you didn’t fight for me back then? How can I believe that you’ll fight for me now?”
Evan’s face fell, and for a moment, he looked completely lost. He opened his mouth to respond, but I shook my head, cutting him off.
“Don’t,” I said, my voice trembling. “Just…don’t.”
I turned away from him, clutching Andy tightly as I began to walk toward the exit.
“Julia!” Evan called after me, his footsteps echoing as he followed.
I stopped abruptly and turned to face him, my heart pounding. “Don’t,” I said again, my voice firmer this time. Please, Evan. Don’t follow me. Don’t make this harder than it already is.”
He froze, his hands clenching at his sides.
