Chapter 69: Little Black Dress
JULIA
“Isn’t it weird?” I asked.
“Oh, it’s weird, alright,” Sarah said, shaking her head as she scrolled through her computer. “That old man is obsessed with you, I swear. Why would he want Andy if he doesn’t like you in the first place?”
I clicked my tongue and shook my head. “I’m not talking about that,” I said. “But that is weird, too. Even the black vans are following me in school. Ellie said that there are some strange men peeking through their gates, too.”
“Hella weird,” Sarah said, shaking her head. “But what weird thing are you talking about?”
party later,” I said, sitting on the couch. “Why would Mr. Matthews invite me there?”
“Maybe he has the hots for you,” she casually said, but it made me cringe.
“Don’t say that. He’s married!” I exclaimed.
Sarah shrugged. “Didn’t you say he got a divorce? Honestly, that guy has been strange since we were still freshmen. He praised your work so much it was insane.”
“Not to brag, but I was really good back then,” I said.
“You’re still good now,” she chimed, making me smile. “But still, it was weird. However…”
“I think you shouldn’t pass up on the party.”
“What do you mean?” I asked, sitting up straight.
“I also thought it was strange how he invited you to an event out of your school hours,” she started off. “So I did. my best to research about the party you’re going to. I can’t let you go if I knew it was going to be sketchy.”
“Now, there are no official details online. However, I saw this post from Mr. Miyagi of him holding his new granddaughter,” she said, turning her laptop screen to me
A small smile appeared on my lips as I stared at the legendary artist looking so soft for a baby.
“I’ve been so busy that I can’t even keep up with my favorite artist,” I said, shaking my head in disappointment. ” The photo is really cute, too.”
“Look closely,” she said, pointing to the coffee table in the frame.
I squinted my eyes. “What am I supposed to be looking at?
She clicked her tongue and shook her head, zooming in on the item she was pertaining to.
“Look!” she exclaimed. “Isn’t that the same invitation you have?”
I pursed my lips and looked more closely. “It has the same color scheme, but we can never be too sure.
Sarah smirked. “I knew you would say that,” she said. “So, went ahead and ran the photo through an app that makes it clearer.”
With that, she clicked on the next photo, making me shake my head in amusement.
how much did you prepare for this?” I asked.
Sarah smiled. “Of course, anything for my best friend!”

I scrutinized the photo, and before I knew it, a smile made its way to my lips. It really appeared to be the same invitation.
Mr. Miyagi has been my favorite artist ever since I was in high school. He was born and raised in Japan and was a child of immigrants. His art had a lot of Asian influence, and it clicked with a worldwide audience.
They were living in poverty when he was younger, but he managed to pull them out of it due to his art. Aside from that, he was never flashy like other artists. He just created what resonated with him, and by doing what he loved, he became a worldwide sensation. A lot of big brands wanted to collaborate with him and his art, but he has refused to do so to this day.
I aspired to be like him one day.
However, that seemed to be a fleeting dream.
“I might be losing touch as an artist, but he’s still my favorite,” I said. “So, I really need to go. I just need to take a photo with him, and I’ll be set for life.”
Sarah shook her head. “You’re not losing touch as an artist. You’ve just been out of the loop.”
I sighed. “If I wasn’t, then I don’t have to repeat the project for Mr. Matthews.”
“Well, at least now, you have the opportunity to meet your favorite artist, right?” Sarah asked. “Burnt toast theory!”
“I think that’s not how it goes,” I chuckled.
“Eh, whatever,” she said, brushing my statement off. “Your new project is really nice, though. Like really…really nice,” she complimented.
“Thanks,” I said, standing from the couch. “Let’s hope Mr. Matthews accepts it this time.”
“Oh, he will,” she smiled.
“I have to get ready then. Is there any way you have another dress for the occasion?” I asked.
Sarah also stood, clasping her hands together in excitement “Oh, I have a dress for everything. Freshen up, and I’ll bring it to your room.”
