Chapter 68: Home
EVAN
“Evan,” I muttered. She called me Evan.
“What’s got you smiling like that?”
I snapped out of my thoughts when Rui placed some paperwork on my table. Then, I cleared my throat and straightened my posture, not bothering to answer his question.
However, he continued to press on the topic.
“It’s rare seeing you smile these days because the party is coming up. Have you even come up with ways to convince Mr. Miyagi to finally sign a collaboration with us?” he asked.
I pursed my lips and leaned against my chair. “We might as well switch seats with how you’re talking,” I said.
He chuckled and put out a peace sign. “I’m just trying to lighten up the situation. Honestly, it’s good seeing you smile like this despite everything going on. I mean your love life is a mess, you have so much work on your plate, and your dad is still pressuring you even if you’re already 25 years old.”
“Do you want to get fired?” I asked as he listed down all my problems.
And the worst part was, that wasn’t even half of it.
He chuckled once more. “Sorry, sorry. Going back to what I was saying, you seem so happy. It makes me not want to relay this report to you.”
I instantly frowned, removing my glasses as I looked at him
“What are you talking about?” I asked.
“Oops,” he said. “Do you still want me to tell you?”
1 sighed. “Just say it, Rui.”
He pursed his lips before speaking. “It looks like your dad is really adamant about getting Andy. He has his men around his school and in Julia’s apartment.‘
My frown deepened. “Did they do anything?
Rui shook his head. “They’re safe. I believe your dad would want Andy to be given voluntarily, just so there are no legal repercussions. He’s probably playing mind games with Julia. You know how your dad is.”
I sighed and placed my head in my hands, letting out a deep breath. “Make sure nothing bad happens to them.”
“I can do that,” Rui said. “That’s all I can do, though. We can’t exactly make your dad stop.”
“I know,” I muttered, closing my eyes for a second.
“Although, it’s weird how you’re doing all of this. I know Andy is your son, but from what I see, you don’t care about Julia anymore, do you? At least, that’s what I inferred after you revealed she was the mother of your child. So with that, wouldn’t it be better to just get custody of Andy and take care of him with Heather?”
His question rendered me speechless. For a long time, I thought that way,
too.

Back then, I swore that If I ever saw Julia, I would let her feel the pain she had inflicted on me. However, I couldn’t bear to see Andy being taken away from her.

“Julia and I were together for a long time,” I said, not really answering his question. “More than four years.”
“Damn,” Rui loudly said, making me raise both eyebrows. He quickly covered his mouth.
“Sorry,” he said. “I didn’t know you could keep a relationship that long. I thought it was more like a one–night stand, especially with how you treated her.”
I shook my head, my gaze fixed on the table.
“I don’t know,” I muttered. “There’s a lot on my mind. I want Andy, too–but not in this way. My son wouldn’t like it if I took him away from his mom, too.”
“I get it,” Rui said, sitting on the edge of the table. “Honestly, even if we’ve only met once, I already like Julia’s aura more than Heather’s. As you know, I’m pretty afraid of women, but I wasn’t afraid of her! Why did you even break up?”
The scenarios replayed in the back of my mind, but I quickly shook my head.
“It’s a long story,” I softly said. Then, I snapped back to reality when my phone buzzed.
I glanced at the screen and saw the time. “Now, get back to work,” I said. “We only have two days until the big party.”
Π
Rui stood from the chair and nodded. “Yes, sir! I’ll visit the place later in your stead.”
“Thanks, Rui,” I said, throwing him a small smile.
