Chapter 1085: You're Not Like Him

This time, Aurora came to a halt, turning to face Maya. "What did you just say?"

Maya's gaze seemed vacant, as if lost in thought. She repeated her previous words in a hushed tone.

Listening, Aurora's grip on Yanis's hand involuntarily tightened. She turned to Yanis and whispered, "Hey, maybe you should head back for now? I'll catch a cab later."

Yanis glanced briefly inside at Maya and nodded, "I'll wait for you by the entrance. Taxis aren't easy to find around here."

After a moment's hesitation, Aurora nodded. "Alright."

Yanis turned and walked to the door, settling into a chair nearby.

As Aurora looked at Yanis taking a seat, she then turned and entered the room. The door was left slightly ajar, and Aurora picked up the items from the floor before addressing Maya, "When did you arrive? Why didn't you tell me? Isn't he still in there? Has he been released?"

Maya explained, "He paid money to reduce his sentence. He might be out by the end of the year or early next year."

Finishing, Maya reached out and caught hold of Aurora's hand. Her grip was tight, her voice urgent, "If he gets out, we won't be safe anymore, Aurora. You should go, leave this place, the farther, the better!"

Aurora patted Maya's hand gently, reassuringly, "I'll leave. What about you?"

Maya's gaze met Aurora's, a hint of melancholy in her eyes. Maya reached up, tucking a loose strand of hair behind Aurora's ear, and softly said, "I've had my share of life's hustle and bustle. Aurora, I beg you, leave this place, don't worry about me. Go far away, and never, ever come back."

Aurora didn't feel particularly grateful for Maya's words; instead, she sensed that Maya treated her like a commodity, casually discarded and used as needed. In her early years, Maya had been in better mental shape, not like now.

Back then, Aurora's heart had been filled with thoughts of that person, yearning to follow him into a better life, even if it meant resorting to unlawful activities. She had been entranced, captivated. She recalled instances when she was almost sent away, given to wealthy older men or well-off individuals with disabilities. The criterion was simple: whoever had money could take her.

During that period, she had even contemplated leaving, distancing herself from Maya, from the Viteto mountains. She wanted to disappear completely, to cut all ties and never cross paths again. But a sense of obligation for Maya's care over the years kept her tethered, delaying her departure year after year.

It wasn't until last year, upon hearing that Sameer had brought a beautiful woman named Nealon back, that Aurora saw an opportunity. She believed it could be a chance for Maya to see reality and leave with her, to escape Viteto Mountain, to escape Nealon.

However, their plan to escape failed, thwarted by circumstances. Nealon was eventually apprehended, his empire crumbled, even Allan, who had always been by Nealon's side, severed ties. This opened a window for Aurora to finally take Maya away from Viteto Mountain.

Originally, she had thought of staying in Viteto, considering their lack of resources. But without money, everything was in vain. Still, she realized that staying in Viteto made it easy for Nealon's henchmen to track them down. Furthermore, if Nealon managed to use his connections to eliminate her, they'd be dragged back to the mountain.

With the knowledge that Nealon had a son, someone in Manches City, Aurora set her sights on that city. If Nealon ever posed a threat, she could take her chances with Zane. Her choice turned out to be wise.

Unexpectedly, she got along fairly well with Zane. Her stable life today owed much to him; without Zane's assistance, surviving Nealon's underlings would have been a struggle. As for Maya, she might not be in an ideal state for treatment, but it was still better than their situation on Viteto Mountain.

With these thoughts, Aurora hugged Maya, her voice gentle, "You don't need to rush me to leave. No one here will dare harm us. Even if he gets out, he won't be able to touch us. Just focus on following the doctor's advice. Once you're better, we'll find a cozy little town to settle in and live a good life. How does that sound?"

Maya's emotions had visibly calmed by now. After Aurora's words, she spoke softly, "Aurora, have you made any friends?"
