We weren't the only ones running though, I saw our neighbors also running in front and behind us.
"Mommy help!" I heard a girl yell and I glanced over my shoulder.
The mum that had carried the child has tripped over a branch and was struggling to get up. The kid was waiting by her side, impatiently trying to pull her up.
I screamed when I saw one of the people grab the mum by her shoulder and tear the skin on her bare shoulder open.
The woman cried and tried to run away, only resulting in the wounds getting deeper. The little girl was crying and I screamed once again when I saw one of the people grabbing the little girls hair and pulling.
I turned my head around and looked in front of me, trying to forget about what I just saw.
Amber was running next to me, her eyes snapping to mine and giving me a quick nod.
"Where are we going to go?" She asked, she whimpered and I realized that she was crying.
"I don't know- HOLY SHIT" A woman jumped in front of me and reached after my face.
"Get away from me" I yelled and ran away from her.
"Are you okay?" I asked Amber.
No answer.
I looked up and in the big crowd of people running everywhere I couldn't find her.
"Amber?" I cried.
"Amber!?" But she was nowhere to be found.
I started crying and saw that people were too busy trying to save themselves to notice me.
I turned around but I couldn't distinguish the people from normal's, since my vision was so blurred from crying.
I saw a few people run towards the woods on the other side of our town, I guess it was the only way to get away from here really.
We only had one road, leading out of the city and it would most certainly be pretty occupied, I reasoned.
My eyes were still searching for Amber's long dark hair.
Me and my twin had very similar facial structure and bodies, but our eye- and hair colours were completely different. Amber had dark straight hair and light brown almost golden eyes, just like our biological dad apparently had, while I had inherited my biological mums unruly red locks and green eyes. I basically looked like the girl from 'Brave'.
It might look cool on her, but I just looked like a troll.
"The zombies are walking towards the school! My child is still there!" I heard a woman yell.
The zombies?
Oh my god.
This was actually an zombie apocalypse.
And that's when it really hit me.
Nothing's gonna be like it used to be.
Where are my parents?
Are they safe?
And Amber?
What about my friends?
The thoughts hit me like bullets and I started to feel dizzy.
Also because I'd run at least 3 kilometers. I was getting closer to the woods and I saw women and men waiting behind the trees with what looked like guns.
When I looked back, I couldn't see any Zombies running this way, fortunately.
I finally ran past the first trees, immediately feeling safer and took a deep breath.
Where do I go now?
"Mum, where are you?" A familiar voice caught my attention and I turned my head in the direction it came from.
It was our neighbors little son, Harry. He was only six years and me and Amber used to babysit him.
He was now standing a few meters in front of me, looking around with wet eyes.
"Papa?" He cried out and my heart broke.
I had to help him.
I started running in his direction but before I got to him, a boy around my age lifted him up and put him in his back.
"Don't worry, little guy. I'll help you" I heard him say.
I decided to run after the guy, since he seemed so calm and collected.
I didn't recognize him, but I didn't get the chance to look very closely neither, so you never know. But there's more than one school here, or maybe he went to the local college?
The further we ran, the less people I could see. People ran in different directions and in different tempos.
When there were only around thirty people in sight, the boy who carried Harry stopped.
"Hold up!" He yelled and people looked at him in confusion.
I grabbed a tree to stop myself from running into him.
People seemed to hesitate, but soon stopped running and looked at him.
"I think we're pretty safe for the moment, but don't you think we should make up a plan?"
