PART 2 – CHAPTER 119
LUKE
I hated these parties. Everyone was dressed up like it was some sort of circus, dishing out alcohol and ridiculously expensive food on massive platters. I groaned inwardly, knowing I had to be part of something this ridiculous, but Jocelyn was right. This was part of the job. It was in the contract. I was pretty sure Josh was out there, doing the exact same thing right now.
Once I shook the hand of what felt like the 150th investor, decided to find Jocelyn, get my phone, and just head back to the apartment. I needed to call Jess anyway–my phone had been dead since I moved in, and I hadn’t even spoken to her.
I spotted Jocelyn in between a few other players, which didn’t surprise me. She was touching one of the guy’s arms and pushing out her chest. She might be beautiful on the outside, but I was convinced she was far less on the inside. I rolled my eyes and swallowed down another glass of whisky. I practically had to chase the women out of my new apartment just to get dressed. She’s probably in her 30s, but fuck it. I’m 19 years old. I might not look it, but I am, and so are those boys she’s talking

My manager is a fucking cougar.
She seemed like the type to frequently mingle with guys like that. I walked over, putting my champagne on a passing tray.
“Jocelyn, I’m gonna head out. Thanks for setting me up in the

apartment, but I’ve got practice in the morning, so we’ll catch up later.”
I nodded to a few of the faces standing behind her. They were also new but inexperienced.
“Jocelyn, my phone,” I added.
“Oh, wait,” she said quickly, “let me just arrange a car for you.”
“No, it’s fine. It’s not that far, and I need to walk. Clear my head a bit and get some fresh air. Thanks anyway.”
I turned to leave, but then she called after me.
“Someone named Jess, I think… I’m not sure what the name was, but they called you,” she said, her tone casual. “I just told them you were busy–you know, doing your job–so yeah, just wanted to let you know.”
I froze. Suddenly, my blood started to burn hot, and tension crawled up my spine.
“You answered my phone?” I asked, turning to face her, trying to keep my voice steady.
Jocelyn blinked, then shrugged. “Just helping. Do you need me to come back with you?”
Jocelyn batted her eyelids and cocked her head to the side, probably attempting a seductive look, but she resembled a cockatoo right now. The feathers on her dress did not help.
“No. I’m good,” I said bluntly, trying to control the irritation. I needed her. I needed her to make sure everyone knew my name and that I was the guy they looked for on the field. The faster I

can make a name for myself, the faster I will be drafted to multiple teams, including one close to Jess.
