Upon hearing the insult, Wesley Eastman flew into a rage. "I am the esteemed young master of the Eastman Group! What are you compared to me? You're nothing but a mere live-in son-in-law. What right do you have to speak to me like that?"
"Live-in son-in-law?"
Chris Shelby laughed, his disdain palpable.
With a mocking tone, Chris asked, "Do you really think I'm just a live-in son-in-law?"
"If not a live-in son-in-law, what are you supposed to be?" Wesley sneered, full of contempt.
Wesley had never bothered to understand who Chris Shelby really was, after discovering his identity as a son-in-law.
In his eyes, any man who agrees to marry into a woman's family is worthless.
"True men," he thought, "would never debase themselves by becoming a live-in son-in-law."
Chris shook his head. Wesley Eastman was a fool!
To dare meddle without knowing who he was dealing with, truly, ignorance knew no fear.
That's when Esther stepped forward, her face stern. "Mr. Eastman, I've been refraining from confrontation out of respect for our families' business relations. But if you persist in this harassment, I won't hesitate to cut ties."
"I am a married woman. I would advise you to be careful in the future, lest you anger my husband, something you cannot afford."
"You..."
Wesley's face darkened instantly at Esther's words.
He couldn't believe that Esther would reject him because of a live-in son-in-law.
"Why, Esther? Why do this?" Wesley protested, his face a mask of frustration. "This man is nothing but a freeloader. How can he compare to me? I am the prestigious heir of the Eastman family. Do you really think he's better than me?"
"If you were with me, Chester Group and Eastman Group could form a powerful alliance that would dominate the Amerosian business world. Who could stand against us?"
Esther almost laughed.
She managed to suppress a smile. Had he still not understood her clear intentions?
Was Chris Shelby merely a live-in son-in-law?
He was the reknowned King of the East Coast!
Chris could crush the entire Eastman Group with a flick of his finger.
What right did Wesley Eastman have to be arrogant in front of Chris Shelby?
He was just a pathetic jester!
Esther, trying to suppress her laughter, replied coldly, "Wesley, I've made myself clear-I am married. Please, stop this pursuit. Besides, my husband and I are deeply in love. You stand no chance in this lifetime."
"If you continue this, I will reconsider the Chester and Eastman Groups' collaboration."
Hearing Esther proclaim her love in front of another made Chris's heart swell with emotion.
To have such a wife, what more could he ask for?
Chris tightly grasped Esther's hand. "Dear, rest assured, as long as you stay true to me, I will never betray you."
As Chris and Esther displayed their affection, Juliette felt like she was being force-fed a mouthful of dog food.
"Hmph!"
Juliet scowled, her mood souring.
Meanwhile, Wesley's complexion turned ashen.
He hadn't expected Esther to make such a declaration.
He felt like a lovesick clown prancing about futilely.
He wished the earth would swallow him whole!
Wesley glared at Chris with murderous intent.
Clearly, he saw Chris as the obstacle to winning Esther.
